Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) has a successor for long-time manager Warren Buffett, but the company isn't saying yet who will replace the investing legend when he is no longer in charge.

In the company's annual letter to shareholders, released Saturday, Buffett noted some of the recent changes at Berkshire, including the fact that Todd Combs came on board as investment manager at the start of 2011 and that Ted Weschler had also joined the team.

"Each will be handling a few billion dollars in 2012, but they have the brains, judgment and character to manage our entire portfolio when [Vice Chair Charlie Munger] and I are no longer running Berkshire," he wrote.

Then to the succession talk, which if read literally, suggests neither Combs nor Weschler is the choice as chief executive. "Your Board is equally enthusiastic about my successor as CEO, an individual to whom they have had a great deal of exposure and whose managerial and human qualities they admire. (We have two superb back-up candidates as well.) When a transfer of responsibility is required, it will be seamless, and Berkshire’s prospects will remain bright.

"More than 98% of my net worth is in Berkshire stock, all of which will go to various philanthropies," the letter continued. "Being so heavily concentrated in one stock defies conventional wisdom. But I’m fine with this arrangement, knowing both the quality and diversity of the businesses we own and the caliber of the people who manage them. With these assets, my successor will enjoy a running start. Do not, however, infer from this discussion that Charlie and I are going anywhere; we continue to be in excellent health, and we love what we do."

The replacement for the 81-year-old Buffett is one of the most closely watched stories in the world of investing, and speculation has been continuing for years. One of the candidates seen as most likely to replace Buffett left the company in disgrace last year. That was David Sokol, who stepped down after questions emerged about his trading in Lubrizol, a company Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire was acquiring. Now, executive Ajit Jain is one candidate many Berkshire observers believe could be the pick.

(Buffett has said he wants his son Howard to one day be chairman -- an unpaid position that wouldn't involve the daily running of the company's operations. Instead, Howard would be what his father calls the "guardian" of Berkshire's values.)

Among other highlights from the letter, Buffett wrote that:

"Last year, I told you that a housing recovery will probably begin within a year or so. I was dead wrong. We have five businesses whose results are significantly influenced by housing activity. The connection is direct at Clayton Homes, which is the largest producer of homes in the country, accounting for about 7% of those constructed during 2011. Housing will come back – you can be sure of that. Over time, the number of housing units necessarily matches the number of households (after allowing for a normal level of vacancies). For a period of years prior to 2008, however, America added more housing units than households. Inevitably, we ended up with far too many units and the bubble popped with a violence that shook the entire economy."

But will Warren Buffet, the thief, pay the more than $1 billion in back taxes that he owes the U.S. Treasury. The liar hasn't even bothered to say. He simply gives the politicians a couple hundred thousand dollars and they leave him alone. BUFFET = #$%$ LIAR THIEF.
    • DukDude 3 months ago
please take your nonsense elsewhere. if he was a thief, the SEC wouldve been all over him a LONG time ago. if he was a liar, he wouldn't be where he is today. read up on the guy before you make ridiculous accusations.

Lots of silly anti-Buffet comments. He's the most outspoken of the wealthy in trying to tell us that "trickle down" was really stupid and doesn't work very well to create jobs. He could be selfish, like most rich people are, and just keep pretending that its a good tax plan for the economy.
    • Charles D 3 months ago
By the way, if you are curious how it is that working people pay a HIGHER tax rate than Romney & Sons, it's a result of the Bush tax cuts that were supposed to "help" the economy. Paris Hilton and Tiger Woods get the same low taxes, since they are "job creators", too. For every small business owner who actually got some benefit from the Bush tax cuts, there's probably 10 rich people who are getting a free ride. Now, Romney's sons will never have to work, but will always have these lower rates than people who actually work for a living. Pretty tricky, huh?

Well, I don't see the old goat giving any of HIS money away, do you? Seems selfish enough to me to warrant being a tightwad!! Guess if he has successors named, ol' Bill Gates is SOL, huh? LOL!

Trust Who, are you completely ignorant regarding Buffet? If so, did you at least read the article?..."More than 98% of my net worth is in Berkshire stock, all of which will go to various philanthropies"

Urine Bucket is a shister. He spends so much money to lobby congress to pass laws so he can make billions of dollars off of other people, then he has the audacity to tell the middle class and poorer people to pay more in taxes. The government should confiscate his wealth.
    • Sozerius 3 months ago
The opposite is what actually happened.. really. Are Americans completely stupid these days. XD -- Buffet encouraged the rich to have higher taxes and for poor/middle class to have lower taxes. That is why he supporte dObama- that is what Obama is trying to acheive. The GOP and all of its contendors are the ones trying to raise taxes on the poor/middle class and lower them on the rich. Why you would blame the ones actually trying to fight this in order to protect the lower/middle class is beyond me.

I don't give a crap , lets talk about peeling off some those Trillions Obama spent and the little people haven't seen a penny of ? Lets not forget who got bailed out and who didn't. I for one didn't so everyone must speak up for themselves to be heard ! hear me now , Where the Fk is my Bailout ? Where, I worked my entire life to be robbed by the very same country I defended for 4 yrs of my life ! The same country I worked for my entire life and paid and paid ...Where is my bailout , my life is ruined by others, not be my own, where is my piece of those Trillions spent ? where ? Every American should demand a minimum of a 100K ! Everyone ! That would be a start for ruining what it took a life time to build !!! Nothing has it's original value anymore ! Money , housing , nothing...3 dollars for a loaf of bread 5 dollars for gas and they want to pay slave wages ! Screw that ! Minimum wage should be 15 dollars a hour by now , 20 more like it, everything got raised 2500% and pay went up 250% , well that don't work ! The Greedy sum #$%$ got wealthier by paying less and charging more, all of them ! It's time for change, it's time to kick some greedy #$%$ butts !!!!

Are you saying that "trickle down" hasn't had enough time to work? You see, Buffet disagrees that it was a good idea at all.
    • Sozerius 3 months ago
Blame Bush, not Obama. Buffet has supported the idea to raise taxes on the rich- defying the GOP and its supporters who claim that the rich need more money in order to fix the economy. But this obviously is not the case, as that is what Bush did with his tax cuts when he was President, and the nation came crashing into the ground after that. God bless Obama for catching the country before it plummeted into an even more severe economic deppression than it has been.

He just buys up nice, dividend paying companies and collects the dividends. He took two that we had, which were extremely sharing, so we had to go elsewhere. He does nothing that takes a bit of skill, and then gives it to Gates. Hmmph.
    • Trust Who 3 months ago
I don't believe that he has given crap to Bill Gates yet and doubt that the old geezer will give anything to the Gates Foundation! WHY should he?
    • foxyfish 3 months ago
Please Google or Yahoo it up....He is giving over $30Billion to the Bill and Melina Gates foundation, as he usually does. (when he can afford it).

All I need to know about Waren Buffett I already know. Obama is his puppet--Buffett pulls his strings--Please, Please keep Buffett out of our faces. He is seen too much. There are more important people in the world making news..
  • srb  •  3 months ago
Okay. You're gonna find out anyway so I may as well tell you now....I'm his successor. He needed someone with no mistresses, no conflict-of-interest stock holdings...and a man who doesn't own a purple, yellow or red tie. It was difficult to find a person like me. Almost as hard as finding a competent politician. Actually I shouldn't say that. Finding a competent politician today is impossible.

The Democrats are the new rich: Buffet, Gates, Obama, the Clintons, John Kerry, The Kennedys, the DuPonts, Hollywood, Jeff Imelt, Wall Street, the labor union bosses: all Democrats. Republicans are NASCAR nose pickers. Democrats are the fancy elite.

And talking about cowards. those are the cowards. The ones in our schools who permit this bullying to go on and on and on. Why don't we use some of that billuminous education money and hire some low priced goons with paddles to patrol the halls and playgrounds, and when they see someone get out of line flail away.

And who are the Burnsville school cowards who hire some puffed up author one month, and find her incompatible the next, and don't just show her her well earned door, but shower $259,000 of sorely needed taxpater money on her for a job not well done as she gleefully leaves.

When you do this at the convenience store you need a mask and a gun.

These are the things you woefully inept commenters should be talking about. Not your silly little let things go on as is comments.

God. Mean something in the world. Do something.
