OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the railroad owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., plans to spend $3.9 billion on network upgrades this year as the economy improves.

The railroad says that its capital spending plan is $400 million bigger than its 2011 budget.

The nation's major freight railroads, which include BNSF, together plan to spend about $13 billion this year, up from 2011's $12 billion.

BNSF says it will spend $2.1 billion to upgrade its core rail network; $1.1 billion on locomotives, freight cars and other equipment; and about $300 million on developing the federally mandated system to remotely stop trains headed for a collision.

The railroad is based in Fort Worth, Texas. Berkshire Hathaway is based in Omaha, Neb.

    $2.00 a barrel by rail, $1.00 a barrel by pipeline....smooth move Mr. O.
Even the Sierra Club considers pipelines safer...

Surprise surprise! And Obama stopped the Keystone pipeline. What an interesting coincidence.

pipeline has nothing to do with railroads ,railroads dont haul oil anyway. and besides pipeline was a lie by the ratpublicants..just like the tax extentions was going to create jobs..500 billion a yr X 12 yrs thats 6 trillion...if that dont create a job nothing will.

hmmm....Buffet dropping big bucks to beef up his railroad, Keystone pipeline that would have made railroads inconsequential gets shot down by O'Loser...Coincidence?!?!

railroads not inconsequential at all when compared to cost of trucking something around. Also means BNSF spent 3.5B last year. 7.4B combined in just 2 years is more than the pipeline. Actually an excellent way to spend the boatloads of cash that accumulates at BRK. Also, BRK owns Mid-America which has plenty of pipelines laid all over the place. And Keystone really just needs to find a way around 100 miles in Nebraska-most of the rest of the line is already set for pipeline highways that already crisscross the country.
