Industries at a glance: business services, builders and retailers lead February US job gains

U.S. employers added 236,000 jobs in February, a robust month of hiring that spread across most major industries.

Professional and business services led all industries with 73,000 net jobs, the Labor Department said Friday. Of those, 16,000 were temporary positions.

Construction firms added 48,000 jobs and have created 151,000 jobs since September. A recovery in housing and a low inventory of homes for sale have combined to drive more demand for homebuilding.

And it appears retailers are optimistic about consumer spending this year, even with gas prices rising and Americans paying higher Social Security taxes. Retail stores added 23,700 jobs last month after adding 29,000 in January.
