CLIF Kid® Launches Fourth Annual Backyard Game of the Year to Promote Outdoor Play

CLIF Kid®, maker of organic snacks for active kids, announced today the return of the fourth annual CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year contest. Launched in 2011 and designed to inspire kids to have fun outside, Backyard Game of the Year promotes the importance of outdoor, imaginative play, and advocates for the positive impact it has on kids’ physical and emotional health.

Starting today through July 3, 2014, this nationwide initiative invites kids ages six through 12 to create and submit an original backyard game, for the chance to win fun prizes. One grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 educational scholarship, a bicycle and helmet, plus $3,500 to put towards a block party so guests can play the outdoor game and celebrate outdoor play.

“Some kids don't want to be organized all the time. They want to let their imaginations run; they want to see where a stream of water takes them,” said Richard Louv, outdoor play advocate and best-selling author of “Last Child in the Woods” and “The Nature Principle.” “One survey shows that although 88 percent of American kids say they spend time online every day, 66 percent say they’ve had a personal experience that made them appreciate nature more, yet most young people simply don’t get enough time outside. There is a real opportunity to help kids balance screen time with outdoor play.”

Louv co-founded the Children & Nature Network, a non-profit organization that is fueling a grassroots movement to connect children, families, and communities to nature. In recognition of its important work, the Children & Nature Network will receive a donation for the fourth year in a row, to support its national network of educators, researchers and community leaders.

“Whether it’s the Sierra Mountains or big city parks, kids can take any outdoor space and transform it into their own personal playground,” said Michelle Ferguson, executive vice president of marketing for CLIF Kid. “Imaginative outdoor play and nutritious food should be a part of every child’s life.”

About the Contest

The contest runs from May 13 through July 3, 2014. Kids ages six to 12 are invited to create and submit original backyard games at The games can utilize common household items such as balls, hula hoops, beanbags and most importantly, creative imaginations for hours of fun.

Three finalists will be announced on CLIF Kid’s Facebook page (, and the public will vote for the overall winner. The online vote will run for one week, July 21 – 28, 2014.

The grand-prize winner will receive a $10,000 educational scholarship, plus $3,500 to throw a fun block party for family and friends; the two runners-up will receive a $1,000 educational scholarship. All monetary prizes are awarded to help kids explore their creativity and reach their full potential. In addition, each finalist will receive a bicycle and helmet. To provide families with a fun, interactive outdoor play resource, select game entries will be published at throughout the contest with educational tips for imaginative, outdoor play.
