Canadians Show That They Are the Walking for a Cure Type

Thousands Fight the Stereotype in Support of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Research

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - June 12, 2015) - On June 14, over 45,000 Canadians in approximately 70 cities across the nation will step up to show they are the "Walking for a cure type" as they take part in the 2015 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes. This year, JDRF aims at raising $7.4 million to fund critical research to cure, better treat and prevent T1D. Since 1994, the Walk has raised over $100 million for T1D research.

After years of uniting communities across Canada, JDRF takes its commitment to finding a cure one step further. "What type are you?" is the 2015 TELUS Walk theme, developed to encourage discussion about how we support those living with T1D and to foster a "never-give-up" spirit amongst families, friends and supporters alike. Using the official #iamthetype and #TELUSWalk hashtags, we will discover the determination of thousands who have decided to walk the walk by raising money to pursue the rich legacy of diabetes research in Canada.

"Canadian researchers are at the forefront of many outstanding breakthroughs in T1D research. From the discovery of insulin, to successful islet cell transplants, and technology moving us closer than ever to delivering a fully automated artificial pancreas, we are pushing closer and closer to a cure," said Dave Prowten, President and CEO of JDRF Canada. "Striking suddenly, T1D is a life-altering diagnosis for the whole family, which is why the TELUS Walk is so significant, as it provides an opportunity to unite the T1D community across Canada."

As our national title sponsor, TELUS continues to help generate public awareness and raise funds for T1D research. Since 2000, the TELUS team has contributed more than $8 million to JDRF. TELUS' partnership with JDRF Canada has enabled the TELUS Walk to raise over $53 million. Thanks to supporters like TELUS, JDRF's Canadian Clinical Trial Network (CCTN) has 13 active trials, nationally. More than 4,000 TELUS team members, family and friends participated in the Walk across Canada and raised more than $450,000 in 2014 alone.

"As an organization committed to using technology to drive better health outcomes for all Canadians, we are proud to be actively involved in a community that is innovating to find a cure for type 1 diabetes," said Paul Lepage, President of TELUS Health. "The advancements in research and continued support for those living with type 1 diabetes would not be where it is today without the passion, commitment and fundraising support of each and every Canadian that has participated in a TELUS Walk."

"On behalf of JDRF and the more than 300,000 Canadians living with T1D, I would like to thank our sponsors -- TELUS, Sun Life Financial and our national supplier SunRype -- for their dedication and support. Together, I know we can turn type one into type none," said Prowten.
