Information technology and business process services firm, CGI Group Inc’s (GIB), recently announced that Estonia’s first satellite launch has been successfully completed with its support. The ESTCube-1 satellite was launched from the European spaceport, French Guiana, on May 7, 2013.
This flexible and user-friendly satellite was mainly launched to test a novel space propulsion technology, which basically deals with electric solar and wind sail, to modernize transport in the solar system.
To develop and build the satellite’s ground station control software, CGI Group collaborated with the University of Tartu. The company used modern software tools and standards as well as the Hummingbird software platform, which is an open source mission control software platform, to build tailor-made software as per the satellite’s mission.
CGI’s collaboration with the university turned out to be effective for the development of the innovative space software for ESTCube-1.The university professors too were highly impressed with CGI’s hands-on experience and have shown their eagerness to collaborate with the company in its future satellite projects as well.
CGI played a pivotal role in the satellite launch. The satellite launch has made an important milestone as it has established a two-way communication. The satellite will be helpful in educating space engineers for developing infrastructure for the forthcoming Estonian space projects.
CGI is a specialist in space security and ground control systems with around 35 years of experience and has provided safe solutions for even complex technical environments. CGI’s works on major European navigation, communication and earth observation programs and its software has supported successful launch of more than 200 satellites.
