CH2M HILL is pleased to have supported National Apprenticeship Week 2014 and has welcomed the Government’s announcement to get 20,000 more young people into apprenticeships and develop the skills required to build strong careers and contribute to growing the UK economy.
Employee owned CH2M HILL has been a leader in its sector on apprenticeships and is one of the six original members of the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium (TAC). Since its creation in 2010, CH2M HILL has played an active role in the organisation which was set up to increase the number of young people taking up apprenticeships and to provide a work based route for aspiring engineers.
One of the apprentices to come through this scheme is Sean Butler, who after joining CH2M HILL as part of the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium in 2011 is now a fully certified Engineering Technician (EngTech) with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Sean has gained experience working on one of the largest projects in the UK, the Tottenham Court Road Station Upgrade and recently received the ICE QUEST Technician Membership Award. Reflecting on his achievements since starting an apprenticeship, Sean said: "If I had to make my decision again I would definitely still choose to pursue an apprenticeship over any other career path. My apprenticeship has enabled me to study whilst working and gain experience at a company which is a global leader in engineering consultancy. This was an opportunity too good to pass up and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in a career in engineering."
Another of CH2M HILL's apprentices is Bethany Wilson who is now working on site and in the project offices as a Higher Level Apprentice in their highways and bridges department. Commenting on the reason she chose to pursue this route, Bethany explained: "I've always wanted to do an apprenticeship because it provides you with real life working experience and allows you to gain the skills required to succeed in your chosen career whilst continuing to study. I'm learning new things every day from people that have worked in this area for many years. The knowledge I am acquiring now will give me a real step up in the coming years to achieve my goals."
