Charles River Labs buys microbial identification testing company Accugenix for $17 million

WILMINGTON, Mass. (AP) -- Medical research equipment and services provider Charles River Laboratories International Inc. said Wednesday that it bought Accugenix, a company that creates testing used to identify microbes.

Charles River Labs paid $17 million in cash for Accugenix, based in Newark, Del. It said Accugenix' testing can be used in the making of biotech drugs, medical devices, nutrition products and consumer care items. Charles River said the deal will not affect its net income this year. In 2013 it will increase the company's sales by about 1 percent and add a small amount to earnings.

Charles River Labs, based in Wilmington, Mass., reported $1.14 billion in revenue in 2011 and expects $1.13 billion to $1.15 billion in 2012.

Shares of Charles River Labs rose 4 cents to close at $36.35.
