Children at Risk from Low-Cholesterol Statin Drugs, Says Organic Chemist Shane Ellison, M.S.

Natural Cures Work Wonders Says Author of "Over-The-Counter Natural Cures"

DENVER, Jan. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Children are being prescribed low-cholesterol drugs that could harm them, says Organic Chemist Shane Ellison, M.S. and author of Over-The-Counter Natural Cures.

"Many people believe they need to lower their cholesterol with cholesterol-lowering alternatives to save them from heart attack and stroke. The myth is so prevalent that the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association issued new guidelines set out to put children as young as 8 years old on cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins). Yet, there isn't a single study to support the claim and considering the many side effects of statins, childhood mortality figures would go through the roof!" said Ellison, who posted a comprehensive review of scientific literature about the negative effects of statins and aspirin on his blog (http://thepeopleschemist.com/does-the-family-really-need-lipitor-and-aspirin/).

"In my book, Over-The-Counter Natural Cures, I expose the overt dangers of many popular drugs, while putting a spotlight on the science that proves how natural medicine, costing less than $10 per month, trumps them all. Readers were dismayed to learn about the insidious business model responsible for hiding these facts," he said.

"Cholesterol is among the most important molecules in the human body, especially for children. It's respective high and low levels do not cause heart disease or prevent heart attack and stroke. To truly live young, get your weight in check and adhere to the 'nutrient logic' outlined in Over-The-Counter Natural Cures. Not only will you preserve health, but also wealth, allowing you to live long enough to achieve your dreams and hundreds more you never thought possible. But it starts, by saying no to statins," he said.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), over 105 million Americans have total cholesterol levels of 200 mg/dL or higher.

"To the pharmaceutical industry, this equates to 105 million potential customers. In order to turn these millions of people into patients, America has been told this cholesterol level is bad for them - so the lower the better," Ellison said.

"But in reality, rising cholesterol levels are simply an observation of biology, which is no different than observing how many heart attack patients owned a refrigerator. In other words, it's a fact of life, not a sign of illness," he said. "With dollar signs in their eyes, drug companies have launched a massive fear campaign about cholesterol."

5 Facts About Cholesterol Your Doctor Doesn't Know About

Cholesterol is a versatile compound that is vital to the function of the human body and just like everything else, cholesterol levels differ greatly among individuals. In humans, cholesterol serves five main functions:

1. Cholesterol is used by the body to manufacture steroids, or cortisone-like hormones, including the sex hormones. These hormones include testosterone, estrogen and cortisone. Combined, these hormones control a myriad of bodily functions.

2. Cholesterol helps the liver produce bile acids. These acids are essential for proper digestion of fats and in ridding the body of waste products.

3. Cholesterol acts to interlock "lipid molecules," which stabilize cell membranes. As such, cholesterol is the building block for all bodily tissues.

4. Most notably, cholesterol is an essential part of the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath, similar to the coating on copper wire, ensures that the brain functions properly by aiding the passage of electrical impulses. Without the myelin sheath, it is difficult to focus and we can lose memory. This is why those on cholesterol-lowering drugs notoriously lose memory. Few users recognize this side effect because they forgot how important having a memory was.

5. And finally, cholesterol has beneficial effects on the immune system. Men with high cholesterol have stronger immune systems than those with low cholesterol.

As a physician I can tell you that this guy is spot on. Medicine is controlled by the pharmaceutical industry, pure and simple. For several years the head of medicine at Mass General Hospital was a paid consultant for Pfizer, maker of the $15 billion a year statin, Lipitor. He was paid $225,000 per year, ON TOP of his regular salary, for going to 4 meetings per year with Pfizer. He was then paid even more $ to go out and give speeches to docs all over the country touting the benefits of Lipitor---just a wee bit of a conflict of interest.

The really sad part is that there is not ONE SINGLE STUDY showing that Lipitor reduces heart attack risk for patients with no risk factors for heart disease and for those at high risk, the absolute risk reduction is around 1% per year. And for women, whether low or high risk, the benefit for taking Lipitor is ZERO.

Essentially, what Pfizer has become is a massive marketing machine and their "golden goose" product has been duping physicians and patients now for about 14 years.

Medicine is just like any other industry people---just follow the money and you'll find the answer. I know you want to believe medicine is exempt from corruption but that couldn't be further from the truth.

And no, Tamice, the vast majority of docs don't talk about lifestyle modification, etc. Why?? They have no time in this world of conveyor belt medicine. It's much faster to just give the patient a pill and send them on their way.

There has been evidence of plaque or cholesterol forming deposits in the arteries of children at very young ages during autopsy reports. Although we do not know the specific mechanism of action that triggers a "plaque eruption" or occulsion event that leads to a stroke/heart attack, we do know that plaque deposits are significant in contributing to that episode. I believe that statins likely work primarily by it's anti-inflammatory effects and stop this plaque eruption.

I don't know where or why the doctors are the bad guys.

I am sure most doctors try lifestyle techniques, diet modification, fiber supplements, otc niacin, coenzyme q, etc to help improve cholesterol levels.

This is not what I am recommending for anyone, but doctors are not one dimensional.

In fact, in the US natural supplements and alternative medicine are used more that prescribed meds. Also natural supplements are not regulated by the FDA for quality assurance. It is also important to emphasize that ANY medicinal substance is a drug natural or synthetic and can potentially cause side effects, harm or drug interactions. , but good products do exsist.

Just think about this what if your child, 50 lbs overweight, dieting and exercising with a professional, taking natural supplements and still has an elevated cholesterol of 250. What would you want for your child?

Marshall is right. I would rather read qualified articles on the Mayo Clinic website than some guy who is a doctor wannabe with conspiracy theories about the government and doctors not telling the truth.

I'm confused. The cholesterol drugs are supposed to lower cholesterol when you make too much of it and it clogs arteries. The drugs aren't eliminating cholesterol, only bringing it into normal level. How do you lose all the benefits of cholesterol under those conditions? I understand that side-effects must be respected, but side effects vs heart attack, I would rather the side effects. These drugs have been around for 35 years.

There is not a single study that proves high cholesterol causes heart disease. And there is no reason for any women to take statins. They do prevent heart attack and stroke(about the same as taking a daily aspirin) but do not increase your mortality rate which is kind of the reason to take it, isn't it? Statins make billlions of dollars a year for a product that does nothing except lower lab values. Why has the "healthy" cholesterol level(which is now 200) that a person should have been lowered numerous times? They do that to scare more people to buy more statins. They needed more people to buy their product so they lowered the number in which you should keep your cholesterol level. Statins are a scam.

This guy is ridiculous, physicians are taught all 5 of the things that this author claims "your doctor doesn't know about" in medical school. Another example of a doctor wannabe who went to a low level university and now trying to make money off the "natural" craze.

First I agree that we should not be giving statins to children without very well controlled, peer reviewed, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trials. The author does do the reader a disservice by discusing the benefits of cholesterol in very broad terms. He fails to mention the fact that physicians look at more than just total cholesterol. They look at HDL, (High Density Lipoprotein - GOOD CHOLESTEROL); LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein - BAD CHOLESTEROL) and triglycerides. Without getting to long winded or scientific, you want your total cholesterol under 200 mg/dl and a HDL to LDL ratio above 0.3 and even better if above 0.4. In other words you want your HDL's high and your LDL's low. Diet and exercise can go a long way in improving these numbers, but some people are genetically predisposed to Hyperlipidemia and lets face it, many people will not alter their diet or exercise in sufficent amounts to affect these numbers so for these people: Statins are an ideal treatment choice

Agenda vs. agenda. Don't buy the medicine from the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies trying to push drugs to people who might not need them. Buy my book to find the reasons why you should only pay about $10 a month instead. Or you could inform yourself as much as possible (plenty of free information on the internet, just make sure to check different sources for consistency), and bring up those concerns whenever you're offered either option. Some people will benefit from statins, and some won't.
