Chromecast’s easy setup makes it susceptible to hacking

Google’s Chromecast streaming stick is remarkably easy to set up for a TV streaming device that doesn’t even have a remote control. However, that setup process also involves the Chromecast briefly functioning as an open, unrestricted Wi-Fi access point — and that’s what helped a clever hacker to take over the device and play Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. In other words: Chromecasts can be rickrolled.

We discuss what this means, and what Google can or can’t do against it, on this week’s Chrome Show podcast, where we also talk about Acer’s success in the Chromebook market as well as the company’s new Core i3 Chromebook, new sales numbers for Chromebooks in the education market, Google’s Project Athena, and more.
