PINEVILLE, La., March 5, 2014 - Today, Cleco Power received one of the electric utility`s top honors for storm assistance from Edison Electric Institute (EEI) during its CEO Conference and Board Meeting in Washington, D.C. Cleco won the Emergency Assistance Award for its power restoration assistance to Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E) after EF5 tornados damaged their electric system during two separate weather events.
EEI presents the annual award to utilities that demonstrate outstanding restoration response following a storm or natural disaster. An independent panel of judges selected Cleco Power for providing exceptional assistance during the Oklahoma tornados.
"This is a special honor for us, and we are proud of our crews who worked this restoration alongside OG&E, a friend who has helped us many times in the past," said Darren Olagues, president of Cleco Power. "Electric utilities have a strong history of lending a hand in times of need. We all understand how difficult restorations can be after storms devastate your electric system. We are happy to help anytime we can. Receiving this award for our assistance is very humbling."
Cleco Power assisted OG&E in Moore, Oklahoma after a strong tornado destroyed its electric system. Crews spent five days in Moore working with others to set more than 800 poles. Seven days after returning from Oklahoma, Cleco Power`s crews returned to the Oklahoma City area after another severe tornado left widespread damage.
"Cleco Power`s assistance in restoration efforts exemplifies the industry`s commitment to serving customers, regardless of service territory," said EEI President Tom Kuhn. "We commend the crews who braved dangerous conditions in the wake of the storms, as they diligently worked to safely and quickly restore service."
This is the fifth time Cleco Power has won EEI`s Emergency Assistance Award since 2003.
