Coal conveyor from 2 W. Pa. Consol mines fails

Coal conveyor fails in western Pa., halting longwall operations at 2 Consol mines in W. Pa.

WEST FINLEY, Pa. (AP) -- Consol Energy Inc. says an above-ground conveyor system has failed in southwestern Pennsylvania, idling longwall coal mining at two mines.

Consol has already begun repairing the conveyor, which also failed about this time last year and halted production at the same two mines that feed the Bailey Preparation Plant in southern Washington County. The Bailey and Enlow Fork mines in neighboring Greene County are affected by the conveyor problem.

The company expects to resume longwall coal production at both mines by Aug. 12. In the meantime, continuous miner units at both sites remain in operation.

Last year's conveyor collapse cost the company at least $53 million.
