ANCHORAGE, Alaska--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Large numbers of Service members are transitioning into civilian life, creating an imperative need for civilian employment to ensure they stay on the path to post-military success. Over the next six months, it is estimated that 1,000 Service members in the Anchorage area will be searching for jobs in the civilian workforce. That’s not to include those Veterans already residing in Alaska who continue to look for work to support their families.
The Coalition for Alaska’s Service Members, Veterans and Families is teaming up with the Alaska National Guard and Army OneSource to host their second HIRING FAIR, a half-day event with employer booths, transitional advisor stations and onsite career development professionals. The HIRING FAIR is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25 from 12pm - 3pm at the Northway Mall in Anchorage. The event is free and open to all Service members, Veterans and their Families. Attendees should bring proof of military connection (Military ID, Veteran ID, or DD-214), resume or work history and references with contact information.
Alaska is home to more than 74,000 Veterans. The remote geography makes it challenging to coordinate services statewide, and rural areas may experience higher unemployment rates. “Many Service members transitioning to civilian employment often report that their biggest challenge is finding quality employment at a living wage. The Coalition’s first HIRING FAIR demonstrated its effectiveness with over 100 attendees, including the hiring of 16 Service members that same day,” said Lt Col Kay Spear-Budd, State Family Program Director for the Alaska National Guard.
During the hiring fair, attendees will learn more about resume writing and tips for interviews. “Over sixty employers and service providers offering national, state and local positions are participating. The scope of the Fair offers a great mix of employers from the oil and gas industry, health and educational fields, and law enforcement,” said Colette Moring, Community Support Coordinator of Army OneSource.
The HIRING FAIR is made possible by the Coalition for Alaska’s Service Members, Veterans and Families, the Alaska National Guard, Army OneSource, the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, GCI, and Northway Mall.
