NEW YORK (AP) -- Coca-Cola Co. said Thursday it alerted the Food and Drug Administration after it discovered via testing its own and competitors' products that some Brazilian growers had sprayed their orange trees with a fungicide that is not approved for use in the U.S.

The FDA had said Monday that an unnamed juice company alerted it in December after detected low levels of the fungicide in orange juice products after testing its own and competitors' products.

Most orange juice products made by Coke and other companies contain a blend of juice from different sources including Brazil.

Atlanta-based Coca-Cola did not say which of its own and others' products it tested contained the fungicide. Its own orange juice products include Simply Orange and Minute Maid.

"This is an industry issue that affects every company that produces products in the U.S. using orange juice from Brazil," said Coca-Cola spokesman Dan Schafer. He declined to say whether its tests shows fungicide in Coca-Cola products

The FDA has said the low levels found of the fungicide aren't a safety risk but they will increase testing to make sure the contamination isn't a problem.

The fungicide, carbendazim, is not currently approved for use on citrus in the U.S., but is used in Brazil, which exports orange juice to the United States. Brazil is the biggest producer of oranges in the world, according to the Agriculture Department.

Coca-Cola says it continues to work with the FDA on the issue.

In addition to Coca-Cola, Pepsico Inc.'s Tropicana brand is one of the largest U.S. orange juice producers.

Coca-Cola shares fell 40 cents to $67.66 in morning trading Thursday. PepsiCo shares fell 28 cents to $64.73 per share.

How about Apple and Grape juice exported by China? They contain much higher level of arsenic than domestic juices.

Fungicide in OJ is just the tip of the iceberg as regards fruit & veggies from all the Latin American countries. Other than bananas, we buy NO fruit or veggies from these countries. Just where do you think all the DDT, and other chemicals banned
by FDA has been shipped and continues to be shipped? Besides all of their water is contaminated. Buy USA and be sure of clean safe food/fruit!

Wal Mart's Great Value Apple Juice has the highest level of arsenic of all the juices, yet it remains on the shelves and parents continue buying it. I cannot bring myself to buy apple or grape juice anymore because I cannot knowingly poison my children. We buy V8 juices, hopefully they are not slowly poisoning us as well.

yup, thats what I wanted to mention...APPLE JUICE!! ...and our waters tested so high levels of arsenic, right here in our back yard! HA, who is to blame, China, brazil...?

You people act so shocked, but do you really know half the crap that is in the food you eat? Im not trying to promote organic (that has just as many issues), but if you cant dismiss the idea that some foods have byproducts that you might not want to know about, you should all start a garden and get some chickens.

Orange juice is contained in a vat for one year then they add ingredients to bring back the taste. Yuck ! I will stay with eating fresh oranges.
    • Philip E 4 months ago
The added ingredients are oils from orange peels. It is a weird process to be sure, but not a harmful one.

Not a healthy one though... and not "fresh" like they claim.

"The FDA has said the low levels found of the fungicide aren't a safety risk" Bet they (FDA) ain't drinking any of it.
  • Warrior From The Fortress  •  4 months ago
First arsenic in the juice and now this, these companies should be ashamed of themselves. If they can't deliver a safe product then I'd say it's time to boycott juice all together until they can guarantee nothing but 100% juice. No flavor packets, no poison, just juice. It's pretty sad that they can't manage to do something that simple.

Florida has oranges, NO? Why are our politicians so stupid? Stop importing all this poison to our people!!!!!
  • Bob C  •  4 months ago
Is Coca-Cola putting this juice in their product? The article doesn't really say that they're rejecting Brazillian oranges. And, by declining to say whether this fungacide shows up in their products, Coca-Cola kinda sounds like they are using the Brazillian oranges.

Could one of these news stories possibly actually contain some INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING????

One of the Best documentaries I have ever seen (I watched it on youtube for free) is:
    "The World According to Monsanto"
It talks about the FDA - and why our "safe" food and drugs, aren't always so safe.
    - It is well worth watching !

So... they notified the FDA and then did nothing themselves? A multi-billion dollar corporation was waiting fora government agency to expend manpower and resources to address a problem that Coca Cola had already identified?
