Colo. man returns $10,000 found at Vegas airport

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado man who found $10,000 before boarding a flight in Las Vegas says he returned the money to the owner because he wanted to show his children it was "the right thing to do."

Greenwood Village resident Mitch Gilbert told KUSA-TV he found two unmarked Caesar's Palace envelopes at the airport and realized there was money inside when he arrived home. The television station reported Monday (http://goo.gl/7aqpU ) that Gilbert called the airport and eventually got in touch with a man from El Paso, Texas, who reported the money missing.

Gilbert says he deposited the money in the man's bank account two days before Christmas. The man told the television station he won the money gambling and dropped it while running to catch a flight.

I don't think it's a matter of 'learning.' It's a matter of emotional connection to humanity.

About 55 years ago, at age 9, I found a wallet with no ID in it on the street and it contained $14. It was like finding a million dollars for me at that age. However, I went to police hq and turned the wallet in to the desk sgt on duty. About an hour later, there was a knock at the door of our thrid-floor walk-up, cold water apartment. An old lady asked for my father (we had the same name) and I told her that her was not home. She said the person she was looking for was someone my age. She gave me $1 and thanked me for being honest. As it turned out, she was a widow who had no family and that was all the money that she had for the month for food, heat and other expenses. I learned a good lesson. Never assume the wealth of others when you find something that belongs to others.

Reminds me of the time my Mom drove to the Springs from San Antonio for my college graduation....she stopped in Colorado City to make a phone call and left her wallet full of cash in the visitor's center phone stall. After a few frantic phone calls, we drove back where we met a really nice lady who ran the visitor's center and my Mom got all of my graduation money back! Don't worry....we shared!

My ex Mother in law wasn't so lucky at a bus stop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She left her wallet at a pay phone, walked away, realized she forgot her wallet, went right back and it was gone, never to be seen again.

Girlfriend found 330 in a wallet under a table while having lunch. The drivers license said
he lived near us so she brought it home and called him. The wife answered and said she would pick it up. Girlfriend said she would bring it over but the wife insisted she would pick it up. Once in our front yard our dogs greeted her. Girlfriend gives her the wallet and the women proceeds to start yelling at my girlfriend for not telling her we had dogs in the yard even thou sign on gate says beware of Dog. No gratitude, reward or being nice...we almost wish we kept it, had we known we would be screamed at, we might have.

Hopefully this good dad got a monetary reward from the El Paso guy? Ultimately the respect of his children will be his lifetime award.

Dropped 10k while running to catch a flight? lol. That's a classic. Most people who drop 10k in Vegas do it at the tables. ;)

    I've returned a wallet...once!!

The reward of doing that far outweighed any cash benefit I might have gotten had I decided not to return the wallet and keep the money, by FAR!!!

Like the Gentlemen in this article said:

IT'S THE 'RIGHT THING TO DO'...!!!

I JUST WISH A LOT MORE PEOPLE WOULD STICK TO THIS RULE. OUR WORLD WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER PLACE!!!

A guy I used to know found some money in a satchel next to the ATM; he bought a new computer-the next day, it caught fire and was destroyed. Karma at it's best!

Its obvious he didnt suffer the fate of most people leaving vegas.......losing! Otherwise he might have reconsidered his generosity. But its good to know there are a few honest people left in the world, good job. Merry Christmas
