NEW YORK (AP) -- It's become the routine in the cable industry that subscribers stream out the door every quarter, hanging up on cable in favor of service from satellite or phone companies. But in the October to December quarter, Comcast Corp. nearly managed to stop that flow.

The country's largest cable company on Wednesday said it lost 17,000 TV customers in the fourth quarter, the smallest number of defections in five years. It compares with a loss of 135,000 subscribers in the same quarter a year earlier.

Comcast credits more video programming available on more screens, like tablets and phones, and better customer service for the improved retention. Its stock jumped nearly 5 percent Wednesday.

CEO Brian Roberts said the company will start growing its video subscriber base once the economy improves and new households start forming.

"We may not get back to full growth on video for a while, because we don't see housing growth at the moment, but some day, that's going to happen," he told analysts on a conference call.

The Philadelphia-based company added a net 336,000 broadband customers in the same period. That was the best fourth-quarter result in years. Both cable and phone companies have been reporting declining numbers, since more than two-thirds of U.S. households already have broadband Internet.

The result indicates that Comcast keeps stealing broadband customers from phone companies. Together, AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. added a net 49,000 broadband customers in the period.

The strong Internet subscriber figures helped boost Comcast's profit for the quarter. The TV business also helped, thanks to higher prices and upselling to bigger programming packages.

Comcast on Wednesday reported net income of $1.29 billion, or 47 cents per share, for the quarter. That's up 26 percent from $1.02 billion, or 36 cents per share, in the last three months of 2010.

Analysts polled by FactSet were on average expecting earnings of 41 cents per share.

Revenue was $15.04 billion, up 55 percent from $9.72 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010. The increase was due mainly to the acquisition of NBC Universal, which closed a year ago. Revenue rose 3 percent when factoring in NBC Universal in the previous-year figure.

Analysts had forecast revenue of $14.94 billion.

Comcast ended the quarter with 22.3 million video subscribers and 18.1 million broadband subscribers, keeping its position as the biggest supplier of both TV and Internet connections to U.S. households.

The cable provider said it was raising its annual dividend from 45 cents to 65 cents per share, and also authorized a new $6.5 billion stock buyback program. The company intends to buy back $3 billion in shares this year. The dividend is worth $1.8 billion to shareholders annually.

Comcast shares rose $1.27, or 4.7 percent to close at $28.52 Wednesday. They hit a four-and-a-half-year high of $29.05 earlier in the day.

For all of 2011, Comcast earned $4.16 billion, or $1.50 per share, up 14 percent from $3.64 billion, or $1.29 per share, in 2010.

Full-year revenue was $55.8 billion, up 47 percent from $37.9 billion in 2010.

No! They've got to come cheaper than that considering you can get streaming movies online. Not interested in cable. They should expect more losses as advances in communication improves.

Comcast recently raised rates to at least to 10%, 20% and 25% starting January 2012 year without notifying customers. Subscribers who have a bundle plan are on-the-hook and are unable to cancel their subscription until it expires and switch to a cheaper provider. Comcast didn't notify customers of the rate hike because they didn't want a mass exitus of subscribers affect their quarter end subscriber loss. But I'm leaving Comcast and going with Verizon (FIOS) because it's a lot cheaper on a monthly basis.

Ive had comcast for over 12 years, only because i like fast internet. If verizon put fiber optic in neighborhood i would drop cable in a second. I'm always having billing problems, and there are no other high speed options where i'm at. Clear is too slow, dsl sucks.

The last place I lived, tv was provided and it was Comcast service. I never saw so many commercials for one company in my life. It got to a point where I was so sick of seeing their ads, I had to change the channel every time one came on. Many of those times, the same ads were playing on the other channels too. I never quite got why they would hammer their own subscribers so much. Now, I have Direct TV and enjoy a much better lineup of channels, a much more reasonable amount of commercials for them and a much more enjoyable viewing experience. For that reason alone, there is no way I would ever consider going back to Comcast.

All I know is that I took my Comcast Bill to the local satellite Provider, The local satellite provider told me that they where unable to match the same level of services to the bill that I currentlty was paying, it would cost considerable more to switch to satellite. as for service, I really can't complain, the equpment works and when my router failed ,they where here the very next day and all was working again,,

The only thing saving Comcast is that the alternatives are not always easy to get started. Verizon in my community became available three years ago however did not reach my neighborhood until a couple months ago so there was no real alternative. Being a past direct tv customer, price was not as critical as the reliability of the service. In the past three years Comcast could never provide a reliable internet service to me and the cost for what I had was 49 dollars a month. Once I could jump tpo Verizon I realized that for two years I would have decent savings and then it would creep back up however there is more viewing choices. Comcast offered three trillion stations with the majority repetitive programming from another channel thnuis the net seclection was poor. Netflix had a good thing for a while but then drcided to screw the public and that went to the trash for me. My best suggestion is stream as much as possible off the internet and stop paying the high cable bill. They will only then be forced to deal with us.

So a declining rate of customer loss is really good news? Seems like a good sign that a company is screwed. Personally, our home is very happy in the post-cable world and will not be going back.

The 10% annual price increases stink, so I keep looking for an alternative. Unfortunately, all the alternative companies are even worse the Comcast.

They never rewarded their loyal customers with anything close to new customer rates, but instead opted to stick it to them. Most of their long time customers that were being gouged must have dumped them.

Glad I had Dish Network, we lost all power for over a week, I purchased a generator, the refrigerator, Freezer and Sat TV worked fine, If I still had Time Warner Cable I would not been able to get a TV signal. Satellite is best by far.

I left Comcast about 5 years ago. Got tired of the poor service. I especially got tired of the delay in getting a tech out to my house when issues came up. Seemed like it was always 1-2 weeks before they could get someone out to my house. With Direct, more often than not they can diagnose the issue over the phone. And if the box is bad, they send me one next-day or two-day...plug it in and connect...issue solved.

Comcast sucks!!! I must be one of the 17,000 that dropped their service over VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. They even screwed up sending me a return package for their own equipment. $125 a month for internet and TV is obscene. Unfortunately for them, they raised the rate one too many times.

Comcast raises its rates twice the cost of inflation every single year and the best advertisement they have is to bad mouth the competition. I was thrilled when Uverse became available to me last year and have been satisfied ever since. Bye bye Comcast !

Have fun. Try watching 2 HD channels in the house yet? Good luck there.
