Consumer Watchdog, a nonprofit advocacy group, is pushing to have an appeals court invalidate a University of Wisconsin-Madison’s patent for stem cells derived from human embryos, citing its similarity to earlier research, says Bloomberg. Consumer Watchdog also says the U.S. Supreme Court’s June ruling limiting ownership rights of human genes should apply to stem cells, adds Bloomberg. StemCells is a company that is involved in the development of tools for use in stem cell-based research and another company, Advanced Cell Technology, are testing therapies to treat macular degeneration, which is a cause of blindness.
