CORONA, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 16, 2014) - Corona plastic surgeon Christopher Chung, MD says many post bariatric patients face the common issue of having extra, loose skin in areas where they have lost a significant amount of weight. From his experience, he notes that the success of their diets, exercise routines, and/or bariatric surgeries resulting in tremendous weight loss can often be overshadowed by uncomfortable and self-conscious feelings regarding their excess skin. Fortunately, adds Dr. Chung, a body lift can effectively address many of these concerns by tightening and minimizing excess skin tissue, typically offering a recontoured, aesthetically-pleasing shape.

In a recent blog post on his website titled, "After Weight Loss Body Contouring: 5 Elements to Consider," the Corona plastic surgeon notes that because a body lift often combines several procedures, such as arm lift, breast lift, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and more, there are many elements to be considered to ensure optimal safety and results.

Dr. Chung says the first thing that must be assessed is the overall physiologic and nutritional state of the patient, which can be determined through simple blood tests and a consultation with the patient's bariatric surgeon or primary care physician. He says optimal health can increase the efficacy and safety of post weight loss surgery.

Next, he recommends patients maintain a stable weight for at least six months before undergoing post bariatric surgery, adding that a stable weight can help them more effectively achieve the results they desire.

Dr. Chung also stresses that post bariatric patients need to fully understand the potential risks and complications of undergoing multiple surgeries, as well as the likelihood of scarring that may result. Lastly, however, he adds that staging of procedures can help to minimize these risks and complications, as well as to increase safety during treatment.

Ultimately, Dr. Chung recommends patients interested in body contouring after weight loss consult with an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon, as well as continue good dietary and exercise habits to maximize the results of post bariatric surgery.
