SANTA CLARA, CA and MIAMI BEACH, FL--(Marketwire -08/14/12)- Are you considering an electric vehicle but aren't sure where you'd charge it? If you live in or commute to San Jose, California, take note, Electric vehicle (EV) drivers can now utilize new EV charging services provided by CarCharging (CCGI) (CCGI) at the County of Santa Clara Civic Center employee parking lot located at 950 North San Pedro Street in San Jose, California. The County has designated 12 parking spaces for EV charging use by County employees or the public.
"The County of Santa Clara is committed to initiatives that help protect the environment," said President George Shirakawa, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. "Offering this service to the public is one way we can further contribute."
Over the years, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors has launched a number of initiatives aimed at protecting the environment. These initiatives include an ordinance to ban single-use plastic bags at supermarkets in unincorporated areas, an e-Stewards Recycling Ordinance which regulates e-waste collection in the unincorporated area and encourages proper management of electronic waste, and establishing an Office of Sustainability to support achievement of the County's energy conservation goals. Earlier this year, the county celebrated the completion of the County's 5.6-megawatt Solar Photovoltaic Project, which includes the installation of photovoltaic systems at eight County sites. The new EV charging stations are located under one of the new solar canopies at the civic center parking lot site.
"Santa Clara County is proud to be part of the expanding network of electric vehicle charging stations available to our residents," said Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager. "Zero-emission vehicles are critical to reversing the effects of global warming."
"As an early member of the Bay Area Climate Change Collaborative, Santa Clara County has demonstrated its 'green' leadership. Our solar panels are already returning power to the grid, now we can go a step further by using them to support public use of electric vehicles," said Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese.
"A growing number of our residents now drive EVs, and we have allocated significant parking space to support their needs for electric vehicle charging at work and while they are visiting various County government agencies," said David Snow, Deputy Director of Facilities and Fleet for the County of Santa Clara.
CarCharging is a global provider of EV charging services and provides a complete turnkey solution for EV charging needs.
"We continue to extend the footprint of our EV charging services in California, to support the most popular markets for demand of electric vehicles and EV charging services," said Michael D. Farkas, CEO of CarCharging. "CarCharging is committed to delivering convenient EV charging services to all EV drivers by providing easy access to our services."
The EV charging services at the County parking lot are provided via dual-headed Coulomb units connected to the ChargePoint® network. CarCharging's services utilize Coulomb Technologies' EV charging station, known as Level II, which provides 240 volts with 32 amps of power to quickly refuel an electric vehicle's battery. The EV charging stations utilize the standard SAE J1772™ connector widely adopted by nearly all automobile manufacturers.
EV drivers can easily register to create a CarCharging account online and receive a small card to attach to their keychain to initiate use and payment at any intelligent CarCharging station. The CarCharging keychain card also allows drivers to use charging locations on the ChargePoint® Network, the largest national online network connecting EV drivers to EV charging stations. CarCharging also accepts direct payment via credit card.
Users can pinpoint EV charging station locations using the CarCharging map at http://www.CarCharging.com/. The ChargePoint® mobile application for the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry phones also provides real-time charging station location information with turn-by-turn directions. Drivers will soon be able to reserve a time slot, guaranteeing access to EV charging stations to recharge their electric vehicle.
Electric vehicles already on the market include the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt, Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, BMW ActiveE, Ford Focus Electric, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Coda, Tesla Model S, and Fisker Karma. Additional electric vehicle models are expected to be available later this year.
