Cray Announces New Hadoop Solution Based on Intel(R) Distribution

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - Feb 26, 2013) - Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) today announced that it will introduce a new solution combining the Intel® Distribution for Apache Hadoop software (Intel® Distribution) with the Cray Xtreme line of supercomputers. The new offering will add to Cray's portfolio of "Big Data" solutions and give customers the ability to leverage the fusion of supercomputing and Big Data.

"Cray has enabled customers to achieve modeling and simulation at the highest scale possible, and we are excited to work with Intel to provide dramatic new levels of data assimilation combined with modeling and simulation -- driving the analytics needed for knowledge discovery and optimal decision making," said Bill Blake, senior vice president and CTO of Cray. "The new features added to the Intel Distribution, such as greater security, improved real-time handling of sensor data, and improved performance throughout the storage hierarchy will benefit Cray's traditional customers in big science and supercomputing, in addition to new commercial customers who need the combination of supercomputing capabilities and an enterprise-strength approach to Big Data."

Introducing a new offering that pairs the Intel Distribution with the Cray Xtreme-X and Cray Xtreme-Cool supercomputers will expand Cray's solution set for the rapidly growing Big Data market. The Company's complementary array of Big Data solutions includes fast data and data movement capabilities with Cray Sonexion storage systems, knowledge discovery using YarcData's uRiKA appliance for graph analytics, and now a powerful Hadoop offering paired with the scalable and flexible line of Cray Xtreme supercomputers.

"Combining the innovation and scale of Cray's supercomputing technologies and solutions with the hardware-enhanced performance, security and manageability of the Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop software will provide organizations with a powerful platform for analyzing massive datasets," said Girish Juneja, general manager of Intel's Big Data Software.

The Cray Xtreme-X and Cray Xtreme-Cool supercomputers are powerful, configurable cluster solutions based on industry standard hardware that will allow for quick implementation of the Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop. The systems offer energy efficient, air-cooled and liquid-cooled architectures featuring high performance, high availability computing, and are integrated with an HPC software stack, software tools compatible with most open source and commercial compilers, tools, schedules, and libraries to run complex applications. The systems are also integrated with the Advanced Cluster Engine, which is an essential management software suite designed to eliminate the complexity of managing HPC clusters. Cray plans to begin shipping this Big Data solution in the second quarter of 2013.
