DA: 5 in takeover of San Francisco building as part of May Day protests to be charged

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco prosecutors plan to file charges against five people arrested in the takeover of a vacant building during May Day protests.

In a statement issued Thursday, District Attorney George Gascon said four protesters will be charged with misdemeanor trespassing. The fifth will face felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of felony assault on a police officer and one count of felony vandalism.

A total of 26 people were arrested when officers and sheriff's deputies cleared the building Wednesday morning, a day after the takeover. The building is owned by the Catholic archdiocese in San Francisco.

Gascon didn't say whether any of the other 21 protesters will be charged. He also didn't identify the five who will be charged, including the one who is expected to face felony charges.
