The campaign to share winter pet safety tips with the public is also hitting the social media scene. In addition to sharing important winter safety related news on its Facebook page, Morton is donating $1 to the ASPCA for every unique "like" it receives on the Morton Salt Facebook page through January 31 , 2012—up  to $55 ,000—above Morton's initial donation of $20,000 to the ASPCA. So far, more than $34,500 has been donated by Morton to the ASPCA as a result of new Facebook "likes" received. Consumers can like the page through January 31, 2012 by visiting www.facebook.com/MortonSalt

"The goal of 'National Keep Pets Safe in Winter' Day is to help save lives and reduce injuries related to harsh winter weather," said Morton brand manager Sara Matuszak . "We are thrilled with the support of the pet community in helping spread the word about the campaign and sharing safety tips with millions of pet owners across the country."

"Pet owners should know how to keep their furry friends safe during the winter, which is what we hope to raise awareness about through this public service campaign with Morton," said Elysia Howard , vice president of marketing and licensing for the ASPCA.

The ASPCA and Morton offer these guidelines for winter pet safety:

  • Keep anti-freeze stored on high shelves in sealed containers, and quickly clean any spills or leakage;
  • Limit outdoor time for pets when temperatures drop below freezing;
  • Use a pet-friendly (salt-free and chloride-free) ice melter such as Morton® Safe-T-Pet® in areas where pets walk;
  • Check warm spots on cars, such as hoods, where animals might seek shelter from the cold;
  • Keep pets on a leash, especially dogs, as they can become disoriented or lost when once familiar surroundings are covered in ice and snow;
  • Wipe paws clean after walking on ice and snow; and
  • Make sure pets are wearing ID tags and proper outerwear as needed.

These tips can be found on Morton's website (www.mortonmelters.com) and on Facebook at (www.facebook.com/MortonSalt).
