Sales at Chrysler improved to their highest level in more than four years, as consumers purchased 163,381 units in March, a 34.2 percent jump from a year ago, the automaker reported this morning

The surge was largely driven by increases at the company's Chrysler brand, which posted a 70 percent jump during the month.

The Auburn Hills, Mich., based company saw sales increase 36 percent within its Jeep unit, and an 18 percent gain at Dodge.

Analysts polled by Bloomberg had forecast a 31 percent jump at the automaker.

The news follows a CNBC report that quoted a Ford executive who said sales increased 5 percent during the month, in line with estimates.

More to come.
