How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major averages fared Tuesday

The Dow Jones closed at its highest level of the year Tuesday. The index is less than 1 percent away from its record set in October 2007. The Standard & Poor's 500 also gained.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 47.46 points, or 0.3 percent, to 14,018.70.

The S&P 500 gained 2.42, or 0.2 percent, to 1,519.43.

The Nasdaq composite fell 5.51 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,186.49.

For the week:

The Dow is up 25.73 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 1.5 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 7.38 points, or 0.2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 914.56 points, or 7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 93.24 points, or 6.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 166.98 points, or 5.53 percent.
