Durable goods, earnings on calendar

Today's event calendar focuses on durable-goods orders, while corporate results continue their heavy flow.

Economists expect the Commerce Department to report that orders declined 3.1 percent last month versus a 5.6 percent gain in February. The number is expected to be unchanged excluding volatile transportation items, compared with a 0.7 percent contraction in the previous quarter. The data comes out at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Weekly crude-oil inventories will be reported at 10:30 a.m. ET, which could affect trading among energy companies.

Aerospace giant Boeing and auto maker Ford are the biggest earnings report today, scheduled for release before the opening bell. Other noteworthy results will come from EMC, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Sprint Nextel, and Whirlpool. Qualcomm, Terex, Cliffs Resources, Western Digital, and Zynga follow after the closing bell.
