Twenty-two percent of U.S. tablet owners use their devices to spend $50 or more per month, and 9% spend $100 or more, according to a survey by market research firm ABI Research. ABI says the percentages are much higher than spending levels for smartphone owners. But the growing popularity of tablet-based purchases has yet to make a big impact on in-store retail sales. As of Jan. 1, ABI estimates nearly 200 mil tablets have been shipped worldwide since '09.
