The first potentially important headline comes from Germany early in the morning when the Zew institute reports its survey of economic sentiment. Given the country's importance in Europe and position as a major exporter, the report could affect sentiment.
The Commerce Department will report March housing starts and building permits at 8:30 a.m. ET. Starts are expected to be 930,000 versus 917,000 the previous month. Forecasters anticipate a reading of 945,000, down slightly from 946,000 in February.
Industrial production follows at 9:45 a.m. and is expected to show a gain of 0.3 percent, compared with 0.7 percent the previous month.
Major earnings reports include Blackrock, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, and Coca Cola in the morning, while Yahoo and Intel follow after the closing bell.
