Earnings dominate this week's calendar of events, with few significant economic releases scheduled.
Haillburton, Hasbro, and McDonalds report quarterly results this morning, followed by Discover Financial Services, Netflix, and Texas Instruments this afternoon. The Chicago Federal Reserve also releases its regional economic index at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Existing home sales follow at 10 a.m. ET and are expected to show transactions slowing to an annualized pace of 5.3 million in September from 5.48 million in the previous month. Weekly crude-oil inventories come out half an hour later.
Tomorrow brings the belated September non-farm payrolls report. While normally a major event, the release is less likely to affect sentiment because it was delayed by the recent government shutdown. The Richmond Fed also publishes its regional index at the same time. Premarket earnings come from Delta Air Lines, DuPont, EMC, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Harley Davidson, Lockheed Martin, Travelers, United Technology, and Whirlpool. Altera, Amgen, Broadcom, and Juniper Networks follow in the evening.
Wednesday's calendar features weekly mortgage applications, export and import prices, the FHFA house price index, and weekly oil-inventory data. Boeing, Caterpillar, Bristol-Myers Squibb, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, and Norfolk Southern report in the morning. Akamai Technologies, AT&T, and Symantec are on the roster for the afternoon.
The only European data comes on Thursday, when flash purchasing managers indexes come from Germany, France, and the Eurozone as a whole. Weekly jobless claims and new home sales are announced in the United States. Boston Scientific, Dow Chemical, Ford Motor, 3M, International Paper, and Altria issue numbers before the opening bell. Amazon, Eastman Chemical, Microsoft, and Western Digital report in the afternoon.
Friday brings durable-goods orders, along with results from Aon, Procter & Gamble, United Parcel Service, and Sherwin-Williams.
