SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Autonomous cars were the subject of a panel discussion at this week's ITS World Congress with carmakers, regulators and technology suppliers discussing self-driving cars with concerns centered more on their feasibility rather than the bells and whistles. EE Times carried the discussion online in response to a special report on the panel, "Are You Ready When Your Google Car Freaks Out?" by Chief International Correspondent, Junko Yoshida. The electronics community weighed in quickly and passionately, debating whether the issues of driver distraction, repercussions, validation, and overall safety are surmountable, going so far as to compare autonomous cars to auto piloting a plane.

"Several airline accidents have been caused by this situation. Their autopilots do their best, with the pilots too often not monitoring the situation on a continuous basis. When the plane's autopilot says suddenly, 'I'm done, it's all yours!' the result has been deadly. Also, I think the problem for cars is MUCH worse than for airplanes. The required reaction time is so much shorter."

"The article clearly reveals that the implementers (Google et al) have no clue how to build a large scale viable system at all....They should be looking more to the 'Highway in the Sky' efforts, where a centralized (though distributed) system is responsible for object management."
