SCHENECTADY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Ellis Medicine was honored by Gartner, Inc. (IT) and awarded the 2014 Gartner Enterprise Information & MDM Excellence Award. The EI-MDM Excellence award recognizes world-class enterprise information management (EIM) initiatives and shares successes, challenges and insights within the space. The honor was given at the annual Gartner Enterprise Information & Master Data Management Summit held in Las Vegas.
In 2007, Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York merged with two other area hospitals fighting to stay alive in the changing healthcare environment. Collectively, the hospitals faced millions of dollars in losses and the management needed strong new operational systems to update the new 438-bed entity with 3,400 employees, now called Ellis Medicine.
“Data at our fingertips was critical to our ultimate success in delivering operational efficiencies across the three hospitals - in patient care, in wait times and in patient and staff satisfaction,” said Paul Milton, chief operating officer of Ellis Medicine. “Having access to real-time information and analytics has helped drive transparency across the organization, resulting in improved staff and patient satisfaction and better informed decision making. We are honored to be viewed as a leader in this area.”
In order to better manage resources, Ellis needed a way to understand what equipment they had on hand, how their staff was using it, and what they really needed to purchase. Additionally, the hospital saw a real need to increase bed turnover and decrease the average length of an average hospital stay. Ellis engaged GE Healthcare and deployed Healthcare Asset Management from GE Predictivity to track location of both assets and patients which resulted in saving $1.1 million over three years while significantly improving the overall patient experience.
The hospital also rolled out a workforce management system developed by API Healthcare, A GE Healthcare Company in 2011, which allowed management and employees to track everything from staffing data and real-time nurse to patient ratios to payroll and overtime. In just one six-month period, the hospital cut overtime costs by more than 25%, or $720,000, compared to the same period prior to deploying the new systems.
Ellis is in the process of rolling out Safer Care Management from GE Predictivity to help optimize staff behaviors for hand hygiene. Using sensors, Ellis will be able to improve hand washing behavior in real-time.
“GE Healthcare is committed to helping hospitals and systems modernize healthcare through software, data, and analytics so they can run hospitals more efficiently and provide better care for patients throughout their journey,” said Mike Swinford, President & CEO, GE Healthcare Global Services. “Connecting and optimizing asset, patient and staff data can help organizations such as Ellis solve some of their biggest operational challenges while driving efficiencies and improving their bottom line.”
