Entergy paying $1.2 million for Hudson oil spill stemming from explosion
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- Entergy Corp., which owns the Indian Point nuclear plants in New York, is paying a $1.2 million penalty for fouling the Hudson River with oil.
New York state's environmental department says the fine stems from a 2010 explosion in a transformer In Buchanan, N.Y. that released at least 10,000 gallons of petroleum. Much of it reached the Hudson and its shoreline.
No one was injured and no radiation was released.
The state says the incident revealed violations of the Clean Water Act and longstanding structural problems, including the failure of a containment moat.
Entergy has agreed to pay and to test, inspect and repair its facilities.
Half the payment will fund an environmental project still to be determined. Entergy says it's looking for appropriate programs.
