Ericsson Launches Multi-Vendor NFV for DOCOMO's Network

Wireless equipment company Ericsson ERIC recently launched a multi-vendor NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) solution for the commercial network of NTT DOCOMO, INC.

This development comes close on the heels of last month’s contract from Indonesian telecom operator XL Axiata, which chose Ericsson to transform its network through the deployment of disaggregated architecture. The contract includes open NFV architecture solutions which will meet XL Axiata`s needs for a standardized multivendor virtualization environment.

The new launch — the first commercial multi-vendor NFV deployment worldwide — builds on Ericsson’s established technology and demonstrates its commitment to deliver superior services based on standardized future-proof architecture.

The new NFV platform is based on an open architecture and offers connectivity and interoperability with any carrier class virtualized network function and Software Defined Networking (“SDN”).

It comprises the OpenStack-based Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment as the virtualization platform and the NFV orchestrator, Ericsson Cloud Manager. The solution initially supports a multi-vendor virtual EPC deployment and also provides system integration and support services.

The new NFV platform delivers excellent performance, operation, reliability and maintenance capacities and is capable of running any network functions from Ericsson and also third parties. The solution will enable NTT DOCOMO to speed up the delivery of new services over an interoperable and steady network.

Ericsson’s NFV network architecture has the potential to expedite global standardization and interoperability, and its collaboration with NTT DOCOMO will accelerate the same in OPNFV, ETSI NFV and 3GPP. Ericsson also intends to develop cloud platform functions in order to support NTT DOCOMO's virtualization in the near future.

Ericsson recently teamed up with the China Mobile Research Institute to co-create Open NFV Lab and the NovoNet. While the Open NFV Lab will focus on developing innovative technologies addressing the telco cloud space, NovoNet will develop NFV, SDN and other revolutionary technologies to fuel next-generation networks. Such strategic collaborations will help Ericsson stay ahead of the curve in a rapidly mutating communications industry.

Ericsson presently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks from the same space that investors can consider are Sonus Networks, Inc. SONS, Polycom, Inc. PLCM and Ubiquiti Networks, Inc. UBNT, both sporting a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
