Investors poured more than $482 million into the PowerShares QQQ Fund (QQQ - News) yesterday, as the U.S. stock market staged its first strong closing in five days.
QQQ, a broad portfolio of Nasdaq’s 100 biggest nonfinancial names, saw its assets rise $29.59 billion on the day. The iShares S'P 500 Index Fund (IVV - News) was also a popular fund, attracting nearly $98 million on Tuesday.
All in all, more than $1.29 billion of new investor assets found their way into U.S. equities ETFs Tuesday, helping push total U.S. ETF assets up to $1.120 trillion, a 0.17 percent climb from where the market ended the day on Monday.
The inflows came as the Dow Jones industrial average tagged on 26.49 points, closing up 0.22 percent at 12,127.95—its first positive closing in a week. The Nasdaq Composite also gained 0.7 percent on the day.
One of the most interesting asset swings of the day, however, came courtesy of the retail sector.
As the market seemed to still be bracing itself for a slowdown in U.S. economic growth amid a generalized lack of consumer confidence, the SPDR S'P Retail ETF (XRT - News) saw its assets jump nearly 60 percent on the day. Investors put $331 million into the fund and XRT now has $891 million in assets.
That said, it’s an ETF that has quite volatile assets under management and short interest, as institutional investors are said to use it for hedging.
The Consumer Discretionary Select SPDR ETF (XLY - News) also made IndexUniverse’s list of the top 10 creations, with inflows of $103 million.
Top Redemptions
High-yield bonds, a segment of the fixed-income market that behaves more like equities than it does bonds, again faced outflows.
Funds like the SPDR Barclays Capital High Yield Bond ETF (JNK - News) and the iShares Boxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond Fund (HYG - News) both made the “Top 10 Redemptions” chart.
JNK lost $102 million Tuesday, or 1 percent of its total assets coming into the session, while HYG unloaded $43 million.
The mammoth $23.4 billion TIPS-focused iShares Barclays TIPS Bond Fund (TIP - News) was also among the least popular funds on the day, shedding $36 million in assets even as fixed income as an asset class attracted more than $600 million in inflows.
