Investors plowed $3.65 billion into the SPDR S'P 500 ETF (SPY - News) on Monday, as stocks ended nearly unchanged following early losses that were mostly retraced on lingering hopes central bankers will step in with new measures to stimulate an economy that’s showing signs of being affected by Europe’s debt crisis.

Overall, total assets invested in U.S.-listed ETFs rose to more than $1.189 trillion, from about $1.179 trillion on Friday, June 29, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse. Flows were positive to the tune of $7.13 billion, with almost $7 billion going into U.S. equities alone.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 8.70 points, or 0.1 percent, to 12,871.39 points, as a weak reading on U.S. manufacturing was offset by hopes the Federal Reserve might implement more bond buying to keep rates low and encourage job-creating borrowing.

The Nos. 2 and 3 funds on IndexUniverse’s “Top 10 Creations” list were the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ - News) and the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM - News), which gathered $727.4 million and $712.6 million, respectively.

Yesterday’s least popular ETF was the iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Treasury Bond Fund (SHY - News), with redemptions of $270.0 million. SHY was followed by another fixed-income ETF, the Shares Barclays TIPS Bond Fund (TIP - News), which had outflows of $155.9 million.

In sum, U.S. fixed income as an asset class bled $282.4 million in assets.
