ETF Fund Flows: SPY Loses $1.23 Billion

Net outflows were $2.25 billion; however, the market’s rise pulled total assets under management up to more than $1.137 trillion from less than $1.128 trillion on Monday, May 21.

Investors pulled $1.23 billion from the SPDR S'P 500 ETF (SPY - News), making it No. 1 on IndexUniverse’s “Top 10 Redemptions” list. Stocks rose with the Dow Jones breaking a streak of six straight losses, as investors regained their confidence in the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 135.10 points, or 1.1 percent, to close at 12,504.48. Stocks rose as investors dove back into the market taking advantage of bargain prices that reflected three weeks of declines. The S'P 500 surged 20.77 points, or 1.6 percent, to close at 1,315.99.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ - News) was No. 2 on IndexUniverse’s redemptions list, with $690.7 million in outflows. The No. 3 fund on IndexUniverse’s creations list was the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT - News), which had outflows of $198.7 million.

U.S.-focused equity ETFs had outflows of $1.76 billion. U.S.-focused fixed-income ETFs had outflows of $271.1 million.

Creations

Investors plowed $161.2 million into the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF - News), making it No. 1 on IndexUniverse’s “Top 10 Creations” list.

The iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM - News) was No. 2 on IndexUniverse’s creations list, with $133.7 million in inflows. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE - News) was No. 3 on the list, with $117.8 million in inflows.
