The bulls set a record this week on Wall Street as the S&P 500 Index hit all-time highs of 1,618 on Friday following the release of April’s upbeat jobs report. New buyers eagerly stepped in and helped carry major equity benchmarks past historical resistance levels as payroll data surpassed expectations and the unemployment rate ticked down to 7.5% [Download 101 ETF Lessons Every Financial Advisor Should Learn].

Trade #1 Short XLI: Down 1.4%

This defensive recommendation was mistimed, despite our fundamental analysis being correct. ISM Manufacturing data from this week came in just barely above expectations, affirming our belief that the industrial sector has been showing signs of a slowdown. However, XLI managed to keep afloat above $41 a share all week and even took part in Friday’s broad-based rally. We exited this position on Friday as XLI hit our outlined stop-loss at $42 a share, leaving us with a minor loss on the week.

Trade #2 Long EWC: Up 2.5%

This recommendation panned out as expected after EWC was able to hold its head above $27.50 a share, which opened up the doors to new buyers and helped push it over the $28 level. EWC managed to pop above its 200-day moving average on Friday, although profit taking pressures did erase some of the gains accumulated earlier in the week; nonetheless, this trade still ended up in green territory with a solid 2.5% gain.

Trade #3 Long RSP: Up 1.9%

This trade turned out for the best, as RSP was able to hold support above $60 a share and gather enough steam to break past resistance after Friday’s upbeat employment report. Bullish euphoria resonated among all corners of the stock market on Friday, which helped carry this equal-weighted ETF higher and lock-in a solid gain of nearly 2% for the week.
