BRUSSELS (AP) -- The European Commission has called off a meeting with Argentine officials after the country revealed plans to nationalize a local unit of a Spanish oil company.

European Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen said a meeting as part of an existing bilateral trade and economic treaty between the EU and Argentina had been scheduled for Thursday and Friday. It has now been postponed until further notice

Earlier Tuesday European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he was "seriously disappointed" by Argentina's decision to nationalize YPF, the Argentine unit of Spanish energy firm Repsol.

Ahrenkilde Hansen also warned that "this creates an uncertainty which is not helpful to our economic relations and to the economy as a whole."
