NEW YORK (AP) -- The former CEO of T-Mobile USA, whose resignation was announced Wednesday, is joining British-based cellphone carrier Vodafone Group PLC as the head of its Northern and Central European operations.

Philipp Humm will be the chief executive of Vodafone operations in Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Turkey, Ireland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania, Vodafone said Thursday.

T-Mobile USA said Humm had resigned to rejoin his family in Germany. The COO is running the Bellevue, Wash.-based company while parent company Deutsche Telekom AG of Germany looks for a new permanent CEO.

Paolo Bertoluzzo, the CEO of Vodafone Italy, will become the CEO of the European operations that don't answer to Humm. They include Spain, Portugal, Greece, Albania and Malta.
