MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Through its employee volunteer service program Exelis Action Corps, defense and aerospace company Exelis (XLS) has partnered with Korn Ferry (KFY), a single source of leadership and talent consulting services, and nonprofit organization Points of Light to host the second cohort of Leveraging Military Leadership Program (LMLP). The program helps new veterans apply their leadership experience to civilian positions.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than one million military service members are projected to leave the military in the coming years. The LMLP teaches veterans how to strengthen their personal, interpersonal and executive communication skills, clearly articulate their unique value, and chart their professional journey based on a strong career strategy.
The second session will kick off June 20-22 in McLean, Virginia and will include a class of 37 veterans from nearly all branches of service with military experience ranging from staff non-commissioned officers to senior officer ranks. The participants will benefit from a team of global leadership experts from Exelis and Korn Ferry who will lead three days of onsite instruction, group exercises and lectures. The in-residence portion of the program will be followed by four months of focused offsite, online, and integrated learning components, as well as individual coaching – the same research-based leadership development services offered by Korn Ferry to Boards, CEOs and senior executives at leading global organizations.
Derek Gordon, a veteran Navy E2C pilot, recently began working as a consultant at a prominent consulting firm after leaving active duty in April. He credits the LMLP with helping him to prepare for job interviews. He participated in the first class session of the program, which kicked off Jan. 24-26.
“When I made the decision to leave the military, the job search and interview process was a looming unknown that I had really never faced. When I attended LMLP I was entering into final-round interviews with multiple external consulting agencies and large technology and pharmaceutical companies,” said Gordon. “The insight of what employers were looking for and the added practice of simulated interviews with feedback from professional head hunters gave me the polish, fine tuning and confidence needed to succeed in that final, most important step. Finally, the career coaching provided after the seminar allowed me to hit the ground running as I began my new career journey.”
"Our goal is to help military leaders capitalize on the world-class development they have already received and apply it to leading in civilian organizations," said Noah Rabinowitz, senior partner, global lead for Executive Leadership Development, Korn Ferry. "This program helps them create a vision, strategy and action plan and gives them the tools to translate their military experience into meaningful accomplishments that are relevant to the civilian recruiter or hiring manager."
“As a veteran who has made the transition from the military to the civilian workforce, I recognize some of the challenges that veterans are facing today,” says Erica Jeffries, chief inclusion and diversity officer at Exelis, and one of the program’s founders. “Our program helps veterans to navigate those challenges and encourages them to seek out the opportunities that will leverage their talents and skills.”
“Military leaders who are transitioning into civilian roles have the greatest success when they train themselves to step away from a military top-down leadership style and adapt a collaborative and sometimes ambiguous decision-making style often found in corporate settings,” said Bernadine Karunaratne, president, U.S. Government consulting services, Korn Ferry. "We are honored to assist them as they embark on their new journey.”
The Leveraging Military Leadership Program will convene multiple times a year and will be held in various sites across the country.
