Facebook, It's Time To Face Facts: You Need Apple More Than It Needs You

It's time for Facebook to go hat in hand to Apple and make a deal to get integrated into its operating systems, iOS and OS X.

The two companies have been in a stand off for a long time.

In 2010, Steve Jobs said Facebook's "onerous terms" prevented it from being integrated into iTunes social network Ping. We're not sure if that was Steve Jobs bending the truth to his liking, or if Facebook was really asking for something outrageous.

Assuming there's some shade of truth to what Jobs said and Facebook was asking for something Apple wouldn't give, Facebook needs to drop it and accept Apple's demands.

Why? Because Apple is doing really well without Facebook. It's the most valuable company in the world. It's producing historically great earnings. People are buying iPads and iPhones in droves.

What about Facebook? It's doing really well, too! Hundreds of millions of people are using Facebook. It has insane profit margins, and it's legitimate, big business.

So, we have two companies that doing just fine operating relatively independent of each other.

Why are we suggesting Facebook blink first, then?

Because Facebook's core mission, according to Mark Zuckerberg's letter to investors, is "to make the world more open and connected." He also said, "At Facebook, we build tools to help people connect with the people they want and share what they want, and by doing this we are extending people’s capacity to build and maintain relationships."

Apple's core mission is to make insanely great products.

Apple doesn't need Facebook to achieve its mission. Facebook, on the other hand, needs Apple to achieve its core mission.

As Apple's integration of Twitter shows, it can be super easy to share things through iOS and OS X. If Facebook wants people sharing more, then it needs to be a part of Apple's world.

So, Facebook, it's time to go back to Apple. It's time to say, "We're ready to work with you, on your terms."

Unless, Apple has truly outrageous terms. In which case, screw those guys. You're doing pretty well as it is.

If anyone knows what's going on between these companies, let us know at jyarow@businessinsider.com.

terrible article.. Google+ is the only social network that needs apple and if you think working with facebook was difficult, wait until the wars between apple and goog heat up.

Funny how two of Silicon Valley's biggest companies are not really technology companies, but marketing companies. For proof, name one new technology invented and developed by Apple or FB.

Apple invented the mouse. They helped perfect initial touch screen technology. They brought the "windowed" world of GUI computing to market with the LISA computer (and arguably, so did Commodore / Broderbund with the GEOS software platform).

Yeah, but you knew all that before you ran your keyboard, huh?

Apple did not invent the mouse. The mouse was invented at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center along with the GUI. That's where Jobs and Wozniak first saw them. I'm still waiting for one example of new technology invented by Apple or FB.

iPhone, iPad, Macintosh, iPod, iPod touch. Lorill, you suck, and Apple is better at you at everything. You mean nothing. Stop being mad at Apple for it. Facebook... invented Facebook? A website... which is directly related to technology. Get over yourself.

Facebook is a joke, right? Of course if I was in solitary confinement I would just love to have all my friends inside a little electronic device. ..lo...
Getting tired of that "F" on every site I visit.

Let's get real here, both Facebook and Apple have unreasonable terms and conditions and neither plays well with others. I would be happy to see both of them implode and fall by the wayside of progress.

So how do you write an article based on general speculation as to whether or not Steve Jobs was being honest about the demands Facebook (a competitor) made? What happened to journalism? Get off your iPad, stop writing commercials for how great Apple is and go confirm facts before you use them as the foundation of your story.... sloppy work; pitiful.

Looks like an infotisementeditorial. Let's hear about China's one million people that build this crud in slave conditions and then sell it here in glossy Apple boxes. Conscience not.

I'm going to guess the #$%$ who wrote this article did so on his mac, while listening to his Itunes enabled device, probably fact-checked by calling his friend on his IPhone.Think about it, #$%$. Apple has taken almost 35 years to get to the point they are. Facebook, about 5.Yeah, Apple doesn't need facebook, huh? Considering their are MILLIONS of people using Facebook that AREN'T using ANYTHING Apple, I'd say this article was full of crap by someone wanting better integration with their walled garden called IOS.

Someone has there pantie in a bunch. "iTunes enabled device"... god, you sound so stupid. lol

Not stupid enough to be a fanboi such as yourself, #$%$Next time you want to comment with the adults, go play with your choochoos instead.

Where was Apple after their first five years?? Will Facebook be around after 35 years?? Maybe should ask myspace this question!

Have you read Apple's developer agreement? Of course they're trying to set ridiculous and onerous terms with FB. If you ask me, FB has already gone the extra mile: they have iPad and iPhone apps available. Apple looks petulant and broken having Twitter integration everywhere but not FB. Ping is a failure. It's Apple that should be eating a little crow.
    • hihi hihi 3 months ago
doesn't matter much if fb includes apple or android apps.

most developers will only go to fb, if they can get some form of revenue return.

developers must weigh in investment vs return in business, common sense.

apple offers a platform and hardware that is much more popular than virtual facebook and it's only going to get better right now. unless PC or the entire internet infrastructure somewhat changes and invents something new, i don't see facebook being able to over take apple because apple is an hardware company that is inventing and producing new, tangible hardware goods which, as a bonus, comes with apps and other software goodies and has facebook also piggy-back riding them too.

It's not a question of one company being able to overtake the other. They have very different business models, and technical strengths. FB doesn't need developers, and they certainly don't need Apple. Apple, on the other hand, wants to make things super easy for their users, and have integrated Twitter all over their OS. So, doesn't it just look silly for them not to also have FB integration? People AREN'T going to see that and say "Gee, FB should really let Apple integrate with them" they ARE going to say "Gee, Apple doesn't understand my needs." Even this website has FB integration. Most major websites have FB integration, but Apple shuts it out of the OS? Dumb.

    Facebook fanboy wrote the article

1 Facebook has low growth potential. They have reached about as far in terms of market penetration that they can. Given competition of G+ and the lightweight competition of Myspace, Linked in and other more niche sites.

2 They can only abuse their customers so far (and they are by most accounts are at that point) the invasions of privacy that Facebook imposes on its user base become to onerous.
3 The next factor to consider is Rate of Loss of viewership as people move onto newer and better. competition like G+

Actually, Apple's core mission is world dominination - think Pinky and the Brain, only the Brain decided to take over the world by designing cool electronics....
