DETROIT (AP) -- Federal safety regulators are investigating reports of fires in the driver's side doors of 2007 Toyota Camry sedans and RAV-4 crossover SUVs.

The probe could affect as many as 830,000 vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday in documents posted on its website. The vehicles have not been recalled.

The fires appear to start in the power window switch on the door. Six fires have been reported to the agency, but NHTSA has no reports of anyone being hurt. The agency said it started the investigation on Monday.

Toyota said in a statement that it is cooperating with NHTSA in the investigation. Customers with concerns should call Toyota at (800) 331-4331.

Toyota's reputation has taken a hit over the past three years due to a string of huge recalls that have ballooned to more than 14 million vehicles worldwide. Millions were recalled for acceleration problems, and Toyota replaced floor mats that can trap gas pedals and pedal assemblies that can stick and cause cars to take off by surprise. But after an exhaustive probe, U.S. safety regulators, aided by NASA engineers, found nothing wrong with Toyota's electronic throttle controls.

Still, the latest investigation is troubling for the automaker because the Camry is consistently is the top-selling car in the U.S., and the RAV-4 also is a big seller. The probe also includes the Solara, which is a coupe version of the Camry.

Toyota sold 473,108 Camrys and 172,752 RAV-4s in 2007, according to Autodata Corp. Some 2007 models may have been sold in 2006.

In December, the 2012 Camry received a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agency's top rating.

First, it was brake failures then wild accelerations killing people. Now door fires. I really want a real 4WD for winter driving, and kinda fell in love with the Toyota FJ Cruiser, but the company that has had a HORRENDOUS track record for safety makes it, no Toyota for me. I'd LOVE to find a 4WD Honda. Great quality cars, hold their value, and some Hondas are more American made than Ford Trucks! Anyone have any ideas?

Jeep Wrangler holds better resale value than ANY other vehicle. And beats any other 4 wheel drive available. I own two 4x4's, a Jeep and a Toyota. Love 'em both but the Jeep outperforms the Toyota.

Obama's brownshirts just trying to kill off any competition to Government Motors. This thuggery will just make Americans buy real cars-- not those subsidiaries of the White House.

Union thug Obama and his NLRB have convinced me to stay away from union made products. I could maybe buy a Ford." Chevy runs deep" into the tax payers pocket.
A Toyota made in a good ol right to work state will do just fine. In the last 4 years i have spent around 300k on new GM cars and trucks .No more. sold my last chevy 6 mos ago.

Not every chevy is great, but there are plenty of great chevy, not all foreign cars are great, but they are plenty of junk

Be careful. Toyota Honda may have more US made content than GM, Ford or Chrysler. I tried to buy Ford Fusion 2009. It was made in Mexico with engine and transmission made by Mazda. Toyota Camry has only engine made by Toyota but most of the remaining parts (body) made in US, like transmission by Borg-Warner.
      Now draw your own conclusions.
