Few catalysts on today's calendar

Today's economic calendar is uneventful, with only two relatively inconsequential reports on the agenda.

MBA will release weekly mortgage-loan data at 7 a.m. ET, followed by crude-oil inventories at 10:30 a.m. ET. Neither release has had a big impact on sentiment in recent weeks. Attention may instead focus on the possibility of military conflict with Syria or the future of Federal Reserve monetary policy.

Tomorrow is more active, featuring European industrial production and initial jobless claims. Kroger and Lululemon Athletica also report earnings before the opening bell.

Friday's numbers are potentially more important: monthly retail sales and consumer sentiment.

Next week brings earnings from Adobe Systems on Tuesday. Housing starts and the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision come the next day, along with results from FedEx and Oracle.
