FIFA prepares to pick lead officials in anti-corruption drive at annual meeting of 208 nations
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -- FIFA's 208 member nations meet this week in an attempt to make progress in cleaning up world soccer after a series of corruption scandals.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter is scheduled to announce Tuesday which independent officials from outside the "football family" will be offered to Friday's Congress for approval to lead new ethics and audit committees.
The chosen candidates will have power to order fresh probes into old allegations, monitor the governing body's billion-dollar annual spending and vet all FIFA officials for their integrity to hold office.
Blatter's much-criticized executive committee also will appoint the first woman to join its ranks.
A two-day medical conference will study cardiac arrest cases and FIFA's anti-doping strategy.
