COMMENTARY | I can remember the first time gasoline went over $4 per gallon and the panic it caused. Though short lived, that rise meant a big difference in the lives of every American. But now, according to a Forbes story, many experts are calling for gasoline prices to hit $6 per gallon in the near future. This is actually not due to oil being scarce but between world turmoil with oil producing countries and selling our own surpluses to countries overseas for profit, prices are likely to continue their climb. I am never in favor of paying more at the pumps and I am now preparing for a fuel cost increase as well as many other price increases that are almost sure to come.

Higher Gas Means Higher Everything

Gasoline at $6 per gallon will make a lot of other products that my family consumes go way up in price as well. Food will be the first thing to go up as all those trucks that handle the logistics of getting food and other products to the stores will have no choice but to charge more for their services, which in turn will almost force the stores to raise their prices. So, I am fully expecting my food budget to be thrown all out of sorts.

Travel will also be greatly affected by higher gasoline prices. This hurts my family as part of our greatest joy is getting out of town for a weekend whenever possible. With higher gasoline prices, the frequency of my family's travel will be far less.

Emergency Gasoline Fund

As silly as it sounds, I have opened an emergency gasoline fund. It's simply a savings account that I have been putting $5 to $10 in each week so I can be fully prepared for the high gas prices that might come. While the money isn't much it will help a little and will at least offset some of the high gasoline costs should my budget not allow for it. After all, my family can cut back on driving, but we can't stop altogether.

Tightening the Budget

With everything from food and everyday products likely to climb right along with the price of gasoline I have tightened my family's budget. While we are pretty good at sticking to our current budget, with the threat of higher prices on the horizon, we have no choice but to rein in all frivolous spending and try to save as much as possible. While my efforts might all be for naught, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I'm impressed. Finally, someone at least trying to do something smart about his situation instead of crying about it.

When everyone that got a tax return went out and bought what they wanted, I told my kids to stock that pantry first then put aside some for gas. One listened, the other one didn't. Now the one that didn't can't seem to make ends meet.

The ant and the grasshopper. It's not like they didn't know what was coming.

    You did good Mr. Collins.

    GOT GAS?
  • dreamer  •  Manila, Philippines  •  2 months ago
At 6 bucks a gallon who could afford to go to work. Just quit and go on welfare.

If you're so scared of gas prices going up that you are starting a savings account, invest in energy mutual funds. Historically they go up and down with gas prices and are proving true now. If gas goes up another 50% then the shares will too.

One needs to have money for that and its risky business!
    • Rick A 2 months ago
Ed....I agree it's risky....and I've read some of your posts.....so do you think the Republicans are right about putting social security into the stock market?
    • GCL 2 months ago
One could argue that putting money in a savings acct. like the article suggests is risky too. And yes, you need money to invest, but my original comment was in response to the article which assumes you have money to invest. If you don't have enough money to spend on gas, I'd suggest you shut off the cable, cell phone, and internet so you have money for food and energy.

So you deregulate the oil market and prices go up. So why are you against regulation of the oil market? The message you're sending to your elected officials is that you like high gas prices.
    • Ed 2 months ago
The world market regulates oil prices, not our congress!
  • Jon  •  2 months ago
Fuel taxes at the pump are figured by percentage. The higher the cost the more the state and fed make per gallon. Were being robbed that way also.
    • Rick A 2 months ago
umm..isn't that how they pay for roads and bridges though?
    • Jared 2 months ago
Not to mention that if those taxes were to go away, oil companies would simply take that as extra profit. Might as well give it to the government for roads.
    • Gerald 2 months ago
Not in all states, Montana doesn't tax fuel by a percetage, it is simply a flat tax per gallon of fuel, so when demand for fuel goes down, so does that tax revenue.

Hey I am sorry you are having a rough time. But just wanted to share that we are a family of 5 with a yearly income of $22,000.00 and our monthly household expenses are on avg of $2,000.00 a month ($24,000.00 yearly). house payments $575.00, lights on avg $700.00, water, sewage, trash pickup $130.00, car payments $100.00, insurance $56.00, freezer/stove payments $171.00, cable/phone/internet $180.00, cell phones $145.00. (2,057.00 yearly) I know why do you keep both cell and house phones? my 75 year old mom lives with us and that is her connection to the world outside, (she has dementia). but none of this includes gas, food, paper products, and cleaning supplies. we have no retirement plans.
    • Fuzzy 2 months ago
Cindy, It is the families like you that I pray for because we both know it is what it is and there is really no were else to save. God Bless You!
    • Rick A 2 months ago
You have cable tv, cell phones, and internet? Read about what we had even 50 years ago. And you can take the city bus and do that for free at the public library. Thats where I used to go to read the free newspaper....
    • that ol gal in Texas 2 months ago
Rick, they are caring for an elderly person with dementia. Maybe they need those things to stay sane and getting out is not always an option. The probably go to the library, too, I bet. Way to go, Cindy! Also, ask a fireman/policeman -- land lines will work when cell towers go out. So there.
  • Jon  •  2 months ago
6 dollar a gallon gas will ruin whats left of our economy. It should be down to about $1.50 a fair price with huge profit built in. The Oil companies and the government are really sticking it to the people in the states. Ill bet Obuffoon has taken huge campaign contributions from these thieves.
    • joe 2 months ago
If gas prices are not government regulated, how is thee government involved beyond taxes?
    • betternyu 2 months ago
      Name calling - very mature.
    • Rick A 2 months ago
Well if you had socialism then the government COULD control prices....but we don't....so the free market controls it...
  • Linskey  •  Brockton, Massachusetts  •  2 months ago
Cant we just conquer the Mideast and take their oil already?
  • Jon  •  2 months ago
Anyone look at what 100 bucks gets you at the grocery store these days. 6 dollar a gallon would get you half that because of transport costs. Fire Obama and his den of thieves.
  • R  •  2 months ago
Preparing for $6 gas would be to move yourself closer to your job and amenities so you can CHOOSE to burn fuel to get around.
  • Jimmy  •  Bowling Green, Kentucky  •  2 months ago
energy prices would necessarily skyrocket. Hmm who said that in 2008?
  • The Town Cryer  •  Cranbury, New Jersey  •  2 months ago
It's insane. I think it will drive many people into abject poverty. If you make eight dollars an hour you won't have enough for food. I think many will curb or stop driving and hopefully it will drive the price down again.
  • Tai-274-Wan  •  3 months ago
what if you make $8.00 an hour as I do, and it all goes for gasoline? Not to mention, sometimes, I don't work a full 40 hour work week?
  • betternyu  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  2 months ago
All of you pro-Bush folks - please remember that Shrubs senior and junior are in the OIL BIDNESS!! Daddy owns a big gusher company (fountains of money comin' out all day everyday) and Shrub jr. owns partial shares and trades in oil all the time. Why don't YOU get real??
  • John Smith  •  2 months ago
Big deal. I live in a motorhome and park at work. Next week, I will park where my girlfriend works, and I'll have to drive 8 minutes to work. Or, walk 40 minutes. We take turns switching off. One week, I drive. The next, it's her turn.

We don't use much gas either way.

So, let that $12-per-gallon gas sit in the underground tank! People will buy motorcycles and scooters. They will walk more. Ain't nobody going to be buying no gas when the price gets crazy!
  • Frugal Mom  •  2 months ago
We've been prepping 4 years ago. I expect gas to go up and our dollar to go down. Instead of saving $5-$10 a week...maybe you should invest in in food before the prices go up?
We've started a food stock pile to offset the cost of food AND gas. Bulk food is cheaper and less trips to the grocery store = savings :0)

If we as Americans Don't stand Together Gas Will Be $10 gal. We have The Power To Turn This Around Now!!
  • M.  •  3 months ago
Oil is the issue. Look at all the things they need oil to make. GO BACK TO MAKING GLASS. Plastic is a huge consumer of oil. Everything comes in plastic these days.
Don't tell me its too expensive to make glass, now. That would help take alot of pressure off for the consumption of oil alone. More to make gasoline, at cheaper prices. But what do I know. Right.
