According to an article published on Yahoo! Finance by Business Insider, Americans have $33 billion worth of old cell phones sitting around their homes. The article pointed out that many old handsets still have value, and that owners could score big by selling them. One example that was given was Apple's iPhone 4 that has a recycled value of $175.
I often take advantage of programs like cell phone recycling to bring some extra money into our house. Here are some other things I resell to earn money.
Right now my husband and I have three computers, two tablets, and at least one other hand-held device that we use nearly every day. Each one of those gadgets has even more gadgets that can attach to it, so we have a lot of computer related stuff in our home. There is a computer consignment shop not far from my house where we take things we can't use anymore to sell. Last spring we sold over $200 worth of items when we cleaned out our stockpile after moving. I plan to do another purge in spring of 2013, and fully expect to earn at least another $100 from the items I sell.
My husband and I are big movie buffs. We love to watch movies even if they are terrible just to say we watched them. While it is fun it does cost us more money than I care to admit, so it's important for us to sell them back every once in a while. We usually spend around $20 per movie, and when we sell them we get around $5 back. We've already sorted our movie collection this year, and plan to sell 15 we don't watch anymore. That means we will receive around $75 for movies that would be collecting dust otherwise.
I'm a frugal person, so paying an extravagant amount of money for a handbag isn't something I like to do. However, I'm a girly-girl at heart, so I do like to have at least one really nice bag in my closet. Luckily, designer handbags have a good resell value if you keep them in good condition, so I can sell one to buy another. The last bag I sold was purchased for $130, and I sold it at a consignment shop for $75, which was about 57% of its original value.
It truly amazes me how much money I have just sitting around my home collecting dust. The three transactions listed above earned or will earn my family $250, and that's just the beginning. So, the next time you decide to toss something out, make sure you do your research because it could be more valuable than you think.
