TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- State Attorney General Pam Bondi says a proposed settlement with BP over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill may leave Floridians shortchanged.

Bondi wrote a letter dated Tuesday to the company's top lawyer. It notes that most of Florida is excluded from the settlement although the deal covers the entire states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

She wrote that for the time being she will give a new BP claims process a chance to prove whether it can provide compensation in areas excluded from the settlement. The proposal covers just 30 of Florida's 67 counties.

Bondi, though, added she would use the full power of her office to ensure BP lives up to its legal responsibilities.

A federal judge in New Orleans as given the settlement preliminary approval.
