HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) -- Florida will be hit the hardest by the closing of Sears and Kmart stores, losing 11, according to a preliminary list of 79 planned closures released Thursday.

Ohio, Michigan and Georgia are not far behind with six store closures planned in their states. Tennessee, North Carolina and Minnesota are set to lose four stores each.

A spokeswoman for Sears Holding Corp. said each store employs between 40 and 80 people.

None of the closures announced so far are in Sears' home state of Illinois.

The 125-year-old retailer said on Tuesday it would close up to 120 stores to raise cash.

The projected closings represent only about 3 percent of Sears Holdings' U.S. stores. Sears and Kmart merged in 2005. The company now has about 3,560 stores in the U.S. That's up from 3,500 immediately after the merger.

The bad news is the economy's weak growth and high unemployment. I'm sorry for the people losing their jobs.

Adjusting for inflation, I earned the same pay as a 13 year old in the 1970's pumping gas than as an older asst manager in 2011. Plus my job was more secure back then.

You people talking about jobs and manufacturing and closings are all missing the point. Our politicians from both sides of the isle sold you out for money power and in the end votes a long while ago. These acts were so they could reap a cushy retirement and lifestyle while the "new jobs" are mostly barely above poverty level. We will never regain our national stature until america begins to only back americans and since we have been taught to be consumers that will not happen! As for free trade paying a corporation money to stay here while they plan to move jobs to another country should net them some type of punitive tax for ripping off the nation its tax value!

All we've heard these past few days is how the economy is "recovering". Right!

My Sears lawnmower (27 years old), washer (32), drier (32), TV (23), Microwave (19), and numerous tools still work fine. Let's see how long will the Chines made crap you are buying these days last...My neighbors front loading washer died after 2 weeks, flat screen TV after 2 months...Crap manufactured today in China is disposable junk. They want you to come back and buy more and more...

It is sad. Watched a "bio" on Sears that MSNBC aired last night. Very interesting and coincidental. The problem with Sears/K-mart seems that they held with old business beliefs while the rest went the way of the masses. Still remember when my sister and I as kids would mark our hoped for toys in the annual Sears "Wish Book" catalogue!

Dont't know if this posted the first time. This is the beginning of more upsetting things to come. We need to stop buying products that are not american made. Companies who wish to abandoned our people and still expect them to purchase their products should be boycotted. They don't care about the job situation here, they made their money. Let's do our part and purchased american made products only.

Michigan has been losing Sears and Kmart stores for the last few years but we are even harder hit because Michigan is home to Whirlpool who make Kenmore appliances. We are losing all of our manufacturing base and feeling the hit hardcore.

It's time for the U.S..to stop ALL foriegn aid and to spend that money here at home to rebuild our economy after Washington has ruined it the past 11 years!

This story is less about Sears and more about the disappearing middle class that used to shop there.

Sometimes when I get on a bus at a shopping mall and go to the last seat I often see a pile of price stickers ( sears mostly ) torn off from merchandise. How this company let alone any other stays in business with so much shop lifting is beyond me.

The impact is larger than what is reported. Most of the Sears stores are in shopping malls when they close the mall will have a huge void to fill.

MY FIRST CREDIT CARD WAS WITH SEARS/ROEBUCK IN 1955 COMING OUT OF
THE MILITARY, MY BROTHER ADVISED ME TO APPLY FOR A CREDIT CARD.
I PURCHASED SEARS PRODUCTS FOR YEARS AND YEARS, AND WAS NEVER
DIS-APPOINTED. IT IS SAD TO SEE THE ''GOOD OLD DAYS'' GONE, AND
WHAT KIND OF COUNTRY WE LIVE IN NOW ???? WE MAKE QUALITY MERCHANDISE IN THE USA, WHY DO WE NEED TO BUY STUFFS FROM FOREIGN
COUNTRIES THAT PUT MONEY IN THEIR POCKETS WITH NO RETURN TO US.
  • concernedgramma  •  Grand Rapids, Michigan  •  1 month 25 days ago
I am sure there are many negative comments about Sears. We just bought two appliances from our local Sears and appreciated the selection, service, and most of all the price. My husband and I are saddened at these closures and hope the company can come back and thrive.

Buy American. Vote out all the incumbants. Everyone of them. They are all the same. Worthless!
