FTE Boost Optical Link Speed

Zacks

France Telecom (FTE), together with its U.K. subsidiary Orange and testing partner Alcatel-Lucent, S.A. (ALU), achieved a new milestone by successfully deploying fastest network speed up to 400 Gbps.

After going through successful testing, the 400 Gbps wavelength optical link is now implemented between Paris and Lyon, hence serving France Telecom-Orange's operational needs.

The new optical link using 44 wavelengths has the capacity to deliver up to 17.6 Terabits per second (Tbps) of data in total, which is four times higher than the maximum bandwidth currently available, hence reducing data traffic.

The newly implemented technology supported with Photonic Service Engine is a milestone for the long-distance terrestrial network technology. It improves business and residential services in terms of multimedia content, social networking and cloud services.

An increased usage of smartphones and tablets coupled with higher downloads of HD movies have stimulated the demand for data usage and faster network speed. Consequently, to suffice the need of the data hungry customers, the telecom companies are continuously upgrading their network services from 2G to 3G and now to advanced 4G LTE technology.

Therefore, the implementation of such technology will help the company to gain significant market traction across its domestic territory, which is heavily dominated by Telecom Italia S.P.A. (TI) and Vodafone Group Plc. (VOD).

Currently, France Telecom carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Paris-based France Telecom is one of the world’s largest telecommunications carriers. It is the largest Internet service provider (ISP) in France as well as in Europe, and conducts its Internet and multimedia services under the Orange brand.
