ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- Gannett Co. says it's selling its downtown Rochester newspaper building that company founder Frank Gannett built 85 years ago.

The Gannett-owned Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester reports (http://on.rocne.ws/W4wS9m ) that the company announced Friday that the Gannett Newspapers building will be sold and the Democrat and Chronicle Media Group will seek a new home for its news and business operations in the city.

Gannett executives say the building no longer suits the size and needs of the newspaper's staff. They say the downtown employees should be in a new location by mid-2014.

The building opened in 1928, housing Gannett's corporate headquarters, printing presses and newsroom for the now-defunct Rochester Times-Union. Democrat and Chronicle staffers moved into the building in 1959.

The company moved its corporate headquarters to McLean, Va., in 1986.
