Former New York Giants offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz announced his retirement Tuesday.

Schwartz, 30, formally announced his retirement in an essay published in SB Nation.

“I loved the process of getting myself ready to play a game. It started in late February and continued all through the season. The workouts, the diets (didn’t always love that, but it worked), the film study, and, most of all, the locker room camaraderie,” Schwartz wrote.

“The payoff of that process was Sundays. Some players dreaded game day, the pressure was too much. I enjoyed that pressure. I thought it always brought out the best of me. I always told myself I’d play as long someone wanted me or until I didn’t love the process anymore. Well, both of things happened, almost at the same time.”

Schwartz, a native of Los Angeles, played collegiately at the University of Oregon. He was named Second-team All-Pac 10 during his senior season. He was drafted in the seventh round (241st overall) of the 2008 Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Schwartz spent his first four NFL seasons with the Panthers before a season each with the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs.

Schwartz came to the Giants as a highly touted free agent in 2014. He was limited by injuries throughout his Giants tenure.

He had toe and ankle problems in 2014, limiting him to just two games. In 2015, he missed the final five games of the season with his ankle injury surface again. The Giants released Schwartz last offseason. He had two years remaining on his deal with $500,000 of his 2016 salary guaranteed.

Schwartz signed with the Detroit Lions as a free agent but was released before the start of the season.

“I’ve known that I’ve been retired for months, so have others around me. Now y’all know, as well,” Schwartz wrote.

Schwartz played the left guard, right guard, and right tackle spots for the Giants. In total, he appeared in 74 games during his NFL career.

Schwartz’s brother, Mitchell, is an offensive lineman for the Chiefs.
